PoE 2 0.5.0 Patch Note: Runes of Aldur League, Endgame & Economy Foresee

Path of Exile 2's 0.5.0 update, Return of the Ancients, is one of the biggest patches so far. It introduces the Runes of Aldur league with entirely new crafting systems, overhauls the endgame Atlas with a Fortress storyline and Masters progression, adds two new Ascendancies, and touches nearly every major mechanic.

The Official Patch Notes for 0.5.0 have been released today!

For players returning or starting fresh, it creates a real economy reset while making progression feel more guided. The changes reward adaptation, especially in crafting and map specialization. Below is a focused breakdown of what matters most, with practical advice pulled from the patch.

Runes of Aldur League: The New Crafting Foundation

This league is built around Remnants — portable crafting stations you find in nearly every area. You insert Runeshapes into slots (ranging from 2 to 10, with higher counts much rarer) to activate Runic Recipes. Each additional rune increases wave count and adds modifiers to the enemies you face. Success gives you the crafted item plus Verisium metal, the league's main currency.

Verisium Runeforging (unlocked in Act 1) lets you spend Verisium to add Runic Ward to armor. This new defense activates at 1 life and regenerates independently. Armor below level 55 gains it cleanly; higher-level pieces sacrifice some regular defenses.

Later unlocks expand options significantly:

  • 13 Alloys (after Act 2) — replace one existing modifier on an item, similar to Perfect Essences.

  • 13 Ancient Runes (after Act 4) — powerful weapon-type specific bonuses.

  • Mythical early-game runes — strong boosts for level 15+ characters.

  • 3 Fluxes — convert resistances between elements.

  • 15+ Meta crafting runes and 60+ runes crafted by destroying uniques.

  • 15+ Runic Ward Runes — focused on the new defense layer.

  • 21 Kalguuran Skills and 8 Kalguuran Supports — entirely new abilities craftable from Remnants.

Ocean Expeditions (updated Logbooks) add story content with Farrow, new islands, Grand Expeditions, and fights against faction leaders (Medved, Vorana, Uhtred, Olroth). The Ruins of Kingsmarch serves as the league hub.

Early league, stick to 4-6 slot Remnants. They balance risk and reward well while you gear up. Higher slots are better once you can handle multi-wave fights with heavy modifiers. Many players undervalue how quickly waves can spiral if you lack single-target damage or mobility — this is one of the more common early deaths in the league. Farm Verisium steadily through campaign quests first, then scale up.

Endgame Overhaul: Atlas, Fortress, and Masters

The Atlas received a full reset with fixed points of interest and quests for every mechanic leading to Pinnacle bosses. You now have two versions of each pinnacle: a deterministic quest version and a harder repeatable farm version.

Origins of Divinity is the new central storyline. Completing towers raises the Fortress, where maps grant Atlas passive points. The tree now has over 300 nodes and can be fully allocated. Multi-choice nodes allow free swapping. Ancient Modifiers appear on maps, and there are new Gateway and Citadel maps.

Masters of the Atlas introduces swappable progression similar to Ascendancies:

  • Each master (Jado, Hilda, Doryani) has 12 nodes — select up to 4 at once.

  • Change selections freely between maps.

  • Unlock rows through specific missions.

This system adds real build-defining flexibility. Running the Fortress storyline early is almost mandatory to power up the Atlas Tree.

Other mechanics received significant updates:

  • Delirium: Progress bar in fog, new mirror shard encounters, Grand Mirrors, Trial of Madness, updated 7-wave Simulacrum, new emotions for jewel crafting.

  • Breach: Genesis Tree for exclusive ring/amulet/belt bases and catalysts. Stabilised Breaches with new boss Vruun.

  • Ritual: Multi-map Rite of the Nameless, improved unique/omen rewards.

  • Fate of the Vaal: Now core with dedicated Atlas tree and better temple rewards.

  • Abyss, Expedition: Quality-of-life changes and integration.

The Atlas encourages specialization. Filling all tablet slots reduces random content, so you can focus on 1-2 mechanics without interference. From past league patterns, players who commit to one Master + targeted Atlas nodes usually progress faster than those trying to do everything at once.

Build and Player Changes: What Got Hit and What Got Stronger

Several defensive layers were adjusted:

  • Energy Shield recharge and recovery values were reduced across many notables and small passives (e.g., faster start nodes cut from 15% to 6%).

  • Leech now allows only one instance per resource at a time, with high-damage hits capped at 40k for calculations. This hurts burst-refill playstyles but rewards consistent investment.

Blood Mage and high-burst leech builds took a noticeable blow. With the new leech rules — only one instance active at a time and hits capped at 40,000 damage for leech calculations — those “full life bar every cast" moments are gone. You'll need more consistent recovery investment rather than pure burst damage.
  • Poison Pathfinder took clear nerfs (Overwhelming Toxicity to 50% less duration, Toxic Growth limits reduced).

Oil Grenade and Oil Barrage mercenaries are feeling the nerf as well. Ignites inflicted on targets by ignited oil ground can no longer compound or chain with other ignites from the same skill. Those satisfying screen-wide explosion chains are now much harder to pull off.
  • Shield-related skills and some melee splash interactions were tuned down.

Whirling Assault players should also take note: melee attacks can now only apply splash damage once per damaging area. Since Whirling Assault creates multiple damaging zones while moving, this change effectively cuts a significant portion of its clear speed and boss damage.

On the positive side:

  • Tempest Bell can now be ancestrally boosted and supports up to 3 active bells.

  • Minions gained new splash supports and more crafting options on rings/belts.

One of the biggest losers in this patch is Infernal Legion minion builds. The damage was roughly halved — minions now burn for 10% of their max life per second instead of 20%, and Infernal Legion III has been completely removed. While regular minion builds got nice buffs, this specific playstyle took a heavy hit.
  • Snipe works with Mirage Deadeye for safer high-damage channeling.

  • New Ascendancies (Martial Artist for Monk, Spirit Walker for Huntress) look well-supported by the buffs.

  • Twister builds remained untouched and should stay strong for fast progression.

These shifts push players toward more layered defenses (including the new Runic Ward) and sustained pressure rather than pure one-shot recovery or extreme ES recharge stacking.

On the brighter side, the two new Ascendancies look very promising. Martial Artist for the Monk and Spirit Walker for the Huntress are well-supported by the patch — especially with Tempest Bell and various spirit/minion buffs. Many players are already eyeing them as strong league starters.

Trading and Market Outlook in the Fresh Economy

Every new league resets values, and this one adds many new consumables. Expect early spikes on Verisium, Alloys, high-value runes, and Runic Ward gear. Divine Orbs are more common, while Greater/Perfect currencies are rarer.

The improved in-game trade search (Shift-Alt click on items) makes price checking much faster. Demand will likely be strong for:

  • Minion-related uniques and supports

  • New Kalguuran skills and crafting bases

  • Resistance Fluxes and versatile meta runes

  • Reworked uniques (especially those with Runic Ward or improved stats)

From experience across previous resets, basic league materials often flood the market in the first week, creating a predictable price drop. Watching for that window can help secure staples cheaply.

FAQs on Path of Exile 2 0.5.0 Return of the Ancients

How should I approach Remnants early in the league?

Start with 4-7 slot Remnants while doing Farrow quests. This builds Verisium and unlocks systems safely. Only push 8-10 slots once your character can handle extended waves with modifiers.

What is the fastest way to progress the new Atlas?

Prioritize the Origins of Divinity Fortress storyline. It gives the bulk of passive points. Then unlock mechanic hubs through their quests for steady progression.

Are ES and leech builds still viable?

Yes, but they require more investment in layered recovery. Runic Ward adds a nice safety net. Focus on consistent leech percentage rather than relying on huge single hits.

When should I run Ocean Expeditions?

Mid-to-late mapping when geared for tougher island encounters. They offer good Verisium and unique rewards but are riskier early.

How do Atlas Masters work compared to regular passives?

They provide flexible, map-specific bonuses you can swap on the fly. Combine them with the static Atlas tree instead of treating them as a complete replacement.

What should I watch for in early trading?

New currencies will spike then likely correct. Grab versatile crafting items and minion gear during dips. The economy favors patience on expensive chase items.
