The opening of the
Season of Discovery brought a resurgence to the level 60 version of the game, with players hoping Blizzard would provide a new experience based on the original version. However, it didn't take long before players gradually abandoned the
Season of Discovery.
When the
Season of Discovery first opened in early December 2023, the daily active player count for
WoW Classic approached nearly 3 million. However, shortly after, there was a decline in numbers. Before the opening of
Phase 2, the daily active player count remained stable at around 1 million.
With the arrival of
Phase 2, the daily active player count peaked at around 2.1 million, but within just a few days, it dropped to just over 900,000. This means that within a mere two months,
WoW Classic has lost over 70% of its player base.
1. Players initially believed that the
Season of Discovery would offer a completely new world. However, aside from adding some
runes, there was no fundamental difference from the original level 60 version. Moreover, these
runes are skills from later versions, essentially the same old wine in a new bottle.
2. Blizzard's approach to class balance on the
Season of Discovery has been entirely unscientific. Without the influence of the PTR, the class balance designers had no idea how to balance the classes, resulting in players feeling weakened before fully leveling up their characters.
3. The duration of
WoW SoD Phase 1 was too long. With a level cap of only 25, it lasted for over two months, leaving players with nothing to do.
Phase 2 was no different, lacking substantial new content, causing players to leave once they reached the maximum level.
4. In the current mainstream
GDKP Raid scene, Blizzard forcibly prohibits players from participating in GDKP. This has once again made loot distribution patterns a point of conflict among players, with cash raids becoming more exaggerated than
GDKP raids and ROLL raids facing numerous issues. In fact, WoW Classic's popularity is partly due to players' nostalgia, but the impact of GDKP cannot be overlooked. The
Season of Discovery itself lacks content and prohibits GDKP, resulting in fewer organized activities and a natural loss of players.
Some players might argue, "A daily active player count of 900,000 isn't low." However, this figure includes
Wotlk Classic,
Classic Era, Hardcore, and SoD.
In November 2023, the daily active player count without SoD was around 1.98 million (affected by the opening of ICC). Based on this calculation, SoD brought in around 1 million players. Now, the combined player count of the four versions of the classic server is less than 1 million, indicating a severe loss of players.
Don't forget, aside from normal players, there are also numerous Bot Workshops in WoW Classic. Blizzard explicitly stated that banning GDKP was to limit bots, yet the number of bots in the
Season of Discovery has not decreased at all, with wilderness bots still forming lines. This is even with the Lone Wolf server being locked down. If we consider servers without locks, the situation is even more exaggerated. Combining daily active user data with WCL data shows that Bot Workshop has become Blizzard's largest customer (excluding Retail servers).
In just two months, normal players worldwide have lost over 70% of their numbers, while bot Workshop has become the largest customer in Classic WoW.
