With the release of
SoD Phase 4, world bosses
Azuregos and
Lord Kazzak are now available, and players are gearing up for Onyxia's Lair and Molten Core next week. To enter Onyxia's Lair, every player must carry the Drakefire Amulet in their inventory.
Follow
MMOJUGG today to find out which quests are needed to obtain the Drakefire Amulet, and uncover a new
Season of Discovery Easter egg along the way.
UPDATE: According to Joardee on X (formerly Twitter), completing the Onyxia's Lair attunement will allow both Alliance and Horde warriors (as well as other players) to visit vendors in Stormwind (Squire Rowe at 70.6, 86.2) and Orgrimmar. These vendors sell the Handbook of Valor of Azeroth and the Chipped Drakefire Amulet. While only warriors may be interested in the skill book, all players will benefit from an account-wide Onyxia attunement, especially given the reported difficulties in completing the attunement on main characters.
Onyxia's Lair Location and Attunement
Onyxia's Lair is located in Dustwallow Marsh and requires a lengthy attunement quest line. Unlike the original version, the Season of Discovery version of Onyxia's Lair has been adjusted to accommodate "40 or fewer" players, possibly similar to the world bosses Azuregos and Lord Kazzak, which are designed for 20 but can hold up to 40 players.
To enter Onyxia's Lair raid, all players must have the Drakefire Amulet in their inventory. Without it, you cannot enter the raid. This means each player must complete the attunement quest line:
For Alliance players, the quest chain starts with
"Dragonkin Menace"
from Morgan's Vigil in Burning Steppes
.For Horde players, the quest chain starts with
"Warlord's Command"
from Kargath in Badlands.
Onyxia Boss Guide
Onyxia's fight is divided into three phases: 100%-65% health, 65%-40% health, and 40%-0% health. Each phase has different mechanics and abilities, so understanding these ahead of time will maximize your chances of success.
Phase 1 Duration: 100% - 65% HP
Onyxia has three primary abilities in this phase: Tail Sweep, Wing Buffet, and Flame Breath. Standing behind or in front of her is dangerous, so stay to her sides. If players get too close to her tail, they will be hit by Tail Sweep and may be knocked into the egg pits, spawning a wave of Onyxian Whelps. The tank should engage Onyxia, slowly turning her tail towards the entrance, keeping the raid at her sides.
Once Onyxia is positioned, the tank should stay against the back wall to prevent Wing Buffet from knocking them across the room. Once Onyxia is in place, DPS can begin attacking the boss. DPS should hold off until she is properly positioned to avoid pulling aggro and wiping the raid. Save major cooldowns for Phase 2.
Phase 2 Duration: 65% - 40% HP
Onyxia has two primary abilities in this phase: Fireball and Deep Breath. Phase 2 begins when Onyxia's health drops to 65%. She will slowly move to the center of the room and then take off.
Phase 2 is the most dangerous, so DPS should save cooldowns for when she reaches 65% health to deal as much damage as possible before she flies away.
Once airborne, Onyxia will use Fireball and Deep Breath. The raid must track her position constantly due to Deep Breath.
During Phase 2, Onyxia will move to one of eight locations around her lair: North, Northeast, Northwest, East, Southeast, South, Southwest, and West.
When she starts casting Deep Breath, the game will warn the raid. All members must run to the sides of the lair she is facing to avoid the attack.
Phase 3 Duration: 40% - 0% HP
Onyxia uses the same three primary abilities from Phase 1 and adds two more: Bellowing Roar and Onyxian Whelps.
When Onyxia's health drops to 40%, she will land in the center of the room. As in Phase 1, DPS must avoid attacking her until she is repositioned. In Phase 3, Onyxia will use Bellowing Roar, a fear effect used intermittently. Tanks should use Berserker Rage to avoid the fear or rely on Tremor Totem/Fear Ward from healers.
Additionally, Onyxian Whelps will occasionally spawn and attack the raid. Off-tanks should gather and AoE them down.
Lava cracks will periodically erupt around the room, dealing fire damage to any player hit. It is recommended to use Greater Fire Protection Potions. Off-tanks should avoid letting all Whelps into the raid group.
That's all the information about Onyxia's Lair. We hope it helps all SoD players!
