Serpentshrine Cavern still hits different in Phase 2. Blizzard made the attunement account-wide, so you only need to complete the chain once on your main—the rest of your characters on the account get automatic access. That said, plenty of players still run the old quest line anyway, partly for the Hand of A'dal title. It gives a nice sense of closure after farming Tier 4 content before stepping into Lady Vashj's lair.
The whole process takes place in three familiar locations: Gruul's Lair, Karazhan, and Heroic Slave Pens. You need Karazhan fully unlocked, Honored with The Violet Eye, and Revered with Cenarion Expedition for the Reservoir Key. That's it—no surprises once you know the order.
Jump into Heroic Slave Pens. Clear to Mennu the Betrayer, drop down the ramp on the left after the boss, and find Skar'this the Heretic caged up in the corner. Grab The Cudgel of Kar'desh. He sends you after two signets: Earthen from Gruul and Blazing from Nightbane.
Requirement | How to Get It | Time Sink Level |
|---|---|---|
Karazhan access | Full attunement | Done early |
Violet Eye – Honored | Karazhan rep grind | Medium |
Cenarion Expedition – Revered | Buy Reservoir Key | Quick |
Most groups already have the first two by the time they think about SSC. The Reservoir Key is the only real gate for alts.

Head to Gruul's Lair and kill Gruul the Dragonkiller. The Earthen Signet drops straight off his corpse. Bag space check before pull—nothing else to it. On Anniversary servers this boss is usually on farm, so slot the kill into your normal weekly run and it barely feels like extra work.
This is the part that stretches. Start by talking to Archmage Alturus outside Karazhan for Medivh's Journal once you're Honored with The Violet Eye. Inside the raid, after the first four bosses, you turn it in to Wravien and push through the short chain involving Kamsis and Shade of Aran.
Then you pick up the solo step outside—grab the Charred Bone Fragment, fly to Netherstorm, and hand it to Kalynna Lathred near Area 52. She sends you into two heroic dungeons:
Darkweaver Syth in Sethekk Halls for the Book of Forgotten Names.
Grand Warlock Nethekurse in Shattered Halls for the Tome of Dusk.
Bring both back and she hands you the Blackened Urn plus the final quest.
Back in Karazhan, one player only needs the urn. Head to Medivh's Terrace balcony, pop it, summon Nightbane, and loot the Blazing Signet. The fight itself is standard Karazhan optional-boss difficulty—nothing that should stop a geared group.
One detail a lot of players miss on busy nights: the Charred Bone Fragment step forces you out of raid group. Plan that solo part for a quiet moment or it can break flow when everyone's keyed up for Nightbane. (Full step-by-step on the Icy Veins SSC Attunement Guide if you want screenshots.)
Once you have both signets, port back to Heroic Slave Pens, hand everything to Skar'this, and he casts the Mark of Vashj on you. Title pops. Done. The attunement itself no longer gates entry, but the Hand of A'dal title sticks around as a nice flex and proof you did the full old-school circuit.
Enter Heroic Slave Pens with the Reservoir Key, kill Mennu the Betrayer, then speak to Skar'this the Heretic in the cage after the ramp. Accept The Cudgel of Kar'desh. That's the single quest that leads to everything else.
Honored with The Violet Eye for the urn line, Revered with Cenarion Expedition for the heroic key, and full Karazhan access. No other reps required.
Finish the Medivh's Journal chain through Kalynna Lathred to get the Blackened Urn. One player uses it on Medivh's Terrace inside Karazhan. Nightbane drops the signet when he dies.
No. The requirement was removed in the Anniversary version. The quest exists purely for the Hand of A'dal title now.
Line up your Gruul kill with a normal raid night, run the two required heroics back-to-back, finish the Netherstorm hand-in, then summon Nightbane on the same Karazhan lockout if your group is up for it. Guild coordination cuts the travel in half.
Raid access helps, but each character still needs their own Violet Eye reputation and Reservoir Key. The dungeon and boss loots go much quicker on alts since you already know the exact routes.
The old SSC attunement chain has essentially become a clean title chase. It's no longer a hard gate for entry on alts, but knocking it out still feels satisfying when you see "Hand of A'dal" next to your name—especially if you're already running Tier 4 raids regularly.
