TBC Anniversary Phase 2 Gold Guide: Best Items to Stock Before SSC and TK

We're deep into March, and Phase 2 is looming. Blizzard's roadmap points to spring, with most estimates landing in mid-to-late April—likely around the 16th to 23rd based on the quarterly cadence we've seen. Phase 1 raids have been out since late February, so we're roughly 6-8 weeks in. SSC and TK are a different beast than Karazhan; they bring longer fights, real mana pressure, and haste requirements that will shift the market from investor speculation to actual raider consumption.

The AH right now? It's still heavy on positioning. That changes the moment guilds start progression and raiders begin chugging pots every wipe night.

The Mana Squeeze: Dark Runes and Consumables

Mana logs from current progression already show the strain, and it's only going to get worse. I think many people are overlooking Dark Runes right now; they're sitting cheap—often under 7-8g—because Karazhan doesn't demand them. But once you hit bosses that drag on for 8+ minutes, they become mandatory. Farming caps the supply ceiling, but the demand floor is incredibly reliable. From a historical perspective, this pre-raid consumable "dump" is almost a law of the market; players rarely buy until they actually feel the pain of a 1% wipe.

Netherbloom is my standout pick here. Supply dries up fast—you can clear the board at 3-4g and watch it stay empty for hours. Haste potions rely on it heavily, and these will be in high rotation for any competitive raid team.

On the flip side, Terocone is a bit of a trap. Phase 1 oversupply is still lingering, and the upcoming Skettis daily hub will only add more drops to the world. While recipes link these two herbs, Terocone's massive backlog means any price spikes will be capped much faster than Netherbloom. If you want to play both, keep your Terocone position light as a hedge, but Netherbloom has the much sharper edge.

Essential Materials and Crafting Flips

Drums of Battle are an almost obvious play at this point. Leatherworkers are currently bleeding gold, dumping them below mat cost just to level up their profession. However, raids burn through piles of these every night. Once the leveling rush ends and stockpiles run dry, a price correction is inevitable. It's a low-risk move—you're basically buying at the floor.

Smaller positions to consider:

  • Swiftthistle: Every rogue log shows Thistle Tea usage, and raid hours are only going up.

  • Nightmare Vine: A solid bet if Warlocks pivot to destruction potions, though it's more of a niche play.

  • Firebloom: A classic long-term hold that rarely loses value.

  • Mana Thistle: This one is tricky. Flask requirements double in Phase 2, but new supply sources might blunt the spike. If you're sitting on these, I'd suggest flipping them during the pre-raid hype rather than holding through the middle of the phase.

Market Timing: The Window is Closing

Timing is everything. You want to build your inventory now before the official announcement. Once the date is set, other investors will start spiking the price, and the profit margins will shrink.

The fast cadence of this anniversary server adds a layer of pressure. With Black Temple likely landing in the summer, Phase 2 won't last forever. This means the consumable burn will ramp up and peak much faster than a standard TBC release. My advice? Don't go all-in on a single item. Markets can turn on a dime, so keep enough liquid gold to pivot if one of these calls misses. Watch your server's logs; when you see mana patterns shifting and kill times lengthening, that's your cue to start unloading.

FAQs for TBC Anniversary Phase 2 Gold Prep

How should I stock consumables before Black Temple?

Focus on Dark Runes and Netherbloom. Phase 2 is the gateway; if you aren't prepared for the mana tax in SSC/TK, you'll be behind for BT. Buy Dark Runes whenever they dip below 7.5g.

Is Netherbloom really better than Terocone?

Yes. Terocone has too much competition from Skettis farmers. Netherbloom supply is much tighter relative to how many Haste Potions a raid actually uses.

When is the absolute best time to sell?

Sell half your stock during the pre-patch hype (when the date is announced) and the other half during the first two weeks of progression. Don't wait for the phase to end; investor dumps usually happen once the "new" wears off.

Should I bother with resist gear for SSC and TK?

Keep it light. Post-nerf tuning means you only need the basics. Focus on Frost/Nature for Hydross and fire sets for your Leotheras tanks. Everything else is secondary to raw throughput.

How does the accelerated schedule change things?

It shortens your "hold" time. You can't sit on items for months. You need to be positioned ahead of the curve and ready to exit early as the community begins looking toward Mount Hyjal and BT.
