Champion of the Naaru: Tempest Keep Attunement Guide | TBC Anniversary Phase 2

In Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary, Tempest Keep: The Eye stands out as one of the major Phase 2 raids that everyone is preparing for. The attunement requirement hasn't been removed—your main character still needs to complete the full questline—but once you finish it, the raid unlocks account-wide for all your characters on the same Battle.net account. Plenty of players are still running the chain anyway, both for the iconic Champion of the Naaru title and the solid early ring reward like the Phoenix-fire Band.

We checked live servers after a few weeks of Phase 1. The chain feels long, but it overlaps nicely with normal progression if you plan it right. Here's exactly how it works now and what actually saves time.

Part One: The Cipher of Damnation in Shadowmoon Valley

The entire attunement path starts with The Cipher of Damnation in Shadowmoon Valley. Alliance picks up The Hand of Gul'dan from Earthmender Sorush at Wildhammer Stronghold; Horde gets it from Earthmender Splinthoof in Shadowmoon Village. Both lead to Earthmender Torlok near the volcano.

Torlok and Oronok Torn-heart

Torlok's elemental quests are quick once you remember to drop the Totem of Spirits before killing each type. After that you meet Oronok Torn-heart up north. His early solo tasks—digging tubers with the boar whistle and collecting flayer eggs—go by fast. Listen to his story and the chain branches into his three sons.

The Three Sons of Oronok

Most players clear Grom'tor's fragment first at Coilskar Point: kill naga, grab keys, open random chests until the First Fragment appears. Ar'tor's branch at Illidari Point involves a demon key, a bow drop from trash, and fighting Veneratus with his spirit's help.

Borak's section at Eclipse Point is the longest and needs a group. You run the blood-thistle egg to Shattrath for the Tobias RP, disguise as a blood elf to get past Grand Commander Ruusk, then take down Ruul the Darkener—the level-71 elite on a nether drake who patrols near Dragonmaw Fortress. A solid 4-5 man group with a tank and healer finishes it cleanly.

The Firelord and Khadgar's Letter

Hand the three fragments back to Oronok, then complete The Cipher of Damnation by summoning and defeating Cyrukh the Firelord at the Altar of Damnation with a small group. That part mails you a letter from Khadgar and opens the next stage in Shattrath.

Part Two: Trials of the Naaru and Heroic Challenges

In Shattrath, speak to A'dal to start the Trials of the Naaru. You'll also want to pick up The Cudgel of Kar'desh from Skar'this the Heretic inside Heroic Slave Pens. He asks for the Earthen Signet from Gruul and the Blazing Signet from Nightbane, so slot those into your existing raid nights.

The Three Heroic Trials

The three Trials are all specific heroic dungeons that require coordination:

  • Trial of Mercy (Shattered Halls): Clear fast enough after the first boss to reach the Executioner before any prisoners die.

  • Trial of Strength: Full clears of Heroic Steamvault for Kalithresh's Trident and Heroic Shadow Labyrinth for Murmur's Essence.

  • Trial of Tenacity (Arcatraz): Keep Millhouse Manastorm alive during the final boss fight with Harbinger Skyriss.

Reputation Gates and Final Raid Step

Get revered reputation with Lower City, Cenarion Expedition, and Sha'tar while working on the Cipher—it prevents hitting a rep wall later. The final step is Trial of the Naaru: Magtheridon. Gather 24 others, kill Magtheridon in his 25-man lair, and turn everything back in to A'dal. You'll receive the Tempest Key, the Phoenix-fire Band, and the Champion of the Naaru title.

Phase 1 Strategy: Maximizing Efficiency

From what we've seen, the smartest move is starting the Cipher early while you're already in Shadowmoon for dailies and rep grinding. It cuts travel time significantly. The Borak branch is the spot where most groups lose time—Ruul's patrol overlaps with other farming routes, so organizing your own small group early avoids a lot of hassle.

WoW Classic TBC Anniversary Phase 2 Attunement FAQs

How do I start the Tempest Keep attunement questline?

Begin with The Hand of Gul'dan in Shadowmoon Valley from your faction's Earthmender NPC. Complete the full Cipher of Damnation first, then speak to Khadgar and A'dal in Shattrath to unlock the Trials of the Naaru.

Do I still need the Tempest Key to enter Tempest Keep in the Anniversary version?

No. Attunement requirements for both Tempest Keep and Serpentshrine Cavern were removed. You can zone in freely, but finishing the chain still gives you the Champion of the Naaru title and the Phoenix-fire Band ring.

What reputation is required for the heroic dungeons in the Trials?

Revered with Lower City (for Shattered Halls and Shadow Labyrinth), Cenarion Expedition (Steamvault), and Sha'tar (Arcatraz). Farm these through normal dungeons and dailies while progressing the Cipher to stay on track.

What rewards do you get from completing the full Tempest Keep attunement chain?

The Amulet of the Torn-heart fire-resist necklace and a weapon choice from the Cipher, plus the Phoenix-fire Band ring and the Champion of the Naaru title at the end.

How hard is the Magtheridon trial in Phase 1?

It requires a coordinated 25-man raid but isn't an extreme gear check yet. Most guilds clear it within one or two nights once they have Karazhan and Gruul experience. Focus on positioning and crowd control.

When should I do this chain and when does the title disappear?

Start it during Phase 1 while groups are easy to form and content overlaps with daily grinding. The Champion of the Naaru title becomes unavailable once Wrath of the Lich King Classic launches.

Thanks for Reading

In short, Tempest Keep attunement remains a real gate on your first character, but the account-wide unlock makes it far less painful for alts. The full questline still delivers one of TBC's more memorable titles and some useful early gear. Stay tuned to MMOJUGG for the latest on Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary.
