Introduction to Molten Core

Molten Core (MC) is one of the high-difficulty raids in World of Warcraft Classic, particularly notable during the 60s. This guide by MMOJUGG will help you understand how to tackle this challenging raid and what loot you can expect.

Location

Molten Core is located inside Blackrock Depths. After completing the necessary quest, you can be teleported to MC from Blackrock Spire.

Background

The creation of Molten Core dates back to the War of the Three Hammers. When Emperor Thaurissan faced defeat by the Bronzebeard Dwarves at the foot of Blackrock Mountain, he summoned elemental forces to turn the tide of battle. He inadvertently summoned Ragnaros, the Firelord, who had been banished to the Elemental Plane by the Titans. Ragnaros, breaking free from Thaurissan's control, brought fire elementals with him, causing Blackrock Mountain to rise and be engulfed in flames forever. Ragnaros enslaved the Dark Iron Dwarves and fell into a slumber, leaving Molten Core under the watch of Majordomo Executus and his flamewalker minions. Ragnaros' hounds also guard the area, the renegade lieutenants of the Windseeker, and the immense Lava Giant, Magmadar, all ensuring that the Firelord remains undisturbed.

Raid Overview

Molten Core is the first large-scale raid in World of Warcraft's history, setting the foundation for subsequent raid designs. Defeating the bosses in MC requires the coordinated effort of a 40-player team, with each member contributing significantly. Conquering these bosses yields numerous epic item rewards and offers a sense of pride and satisfaction from successful teamwork.

Trash Mobs

Respawn Timers:

Twin Giants: Approximately 4 hours

Patrol Hounds and Lava Surgers: 18 minutes

Five Hounds: 1 hour

Lava Packs: 1.5 hours

Imps: 5 minutes

Lava Annihilators and Flame Imps: 2 hours

Patrol Hounds stop respawning after killing Magmadar (second boss).

Lava Surgers stop respawning after killing Garr (fourth boss).

1. Lava Giants Types: Level 62 and 63

Level 62 Giants: Position away from the group, as they don't use AoE stomp.

Level 63 Giants: Tanks need to stand against a wall to avoid being knocked back and losing aggro. Be ready to taunt immediately after knockback.

2. Lava Annihilators

These mobs reset aggro after killing a target.

Tanks must taunt as soon as the cooldown is ready. Assign a sequence for tanks (1, 2, 3, 4) to ensure seamless taunt coverage.

3. Lava Surger

They charge the farthest target.

Everyone should stand within the designated red circle range to prevent surges. Warn players who like to stand far to be prepared for repair costs.

4. Hounds

Abilities: Randomly have two of the following: stomp (AoE stun), fire resistance debuff, health debuff, fear, slow.

Avoid facing the hound's front towards the group due to potential breath attacks. Tanks should position hounds carefully to minimize group damage.

5. Five Hounds

All five must be killed simultaneously, or they will revive with full health. Each tank should pick up one hound and bring them together for AoE. Melee should focus on adjusting health levels to ensure synchronized kills.

6. Four-Man Group Composition: Typically consists of two fire elementals and two rock giants.

Hunters pull the group, followed by warlocks banishing the rock giants.

Tanks use Bloodrage and Battle Shout immediately after the pull to establish initial aggro.

Tanks should face the fire elementals away from the group and position against a wall to mitigate fire flower AoE.

Once fire elementals are down, tanks should be ready to pick up the rock giants after the banish ends.

Tanks should wear fire resistance or high-stamina gear. Pull the fire elementals away from the group and turn them around to avoid AoE damage. Ensure swift taunts and solid positioning to prevent chaos.

Lucifron guide

Skills:

Lucifron's Curse: Effect: Increases mana/energy/rage costs by 100% for 5 minutes. Range: 40 yards.

Impending Doom: Effect: Inflicts AoE damage after 10 seconds.Approximately 2000. Range: 35 yards.

Minion Abilities:

Disarm: Temporarily disables weapons.

Mind Control: Temporarily takes control of a player.

Tactics:

Curse Management: Priority: Dispel curses immediately, prioritizing tanks > healers > casters > others.

Responsibility: All mages and druids should prioritize decursing, with no one focusing on DPS over this task.

Magic Dispel: Responsibility: Priests and Paladins should dispel magic effects immediately.

Positioning: Ranged: Spread out to avoid taking collective damage from AoE.

Melee: If debuffed and not dispelled, move away from the group before the AoE triggers.

Phase 1:

Positioning:

Boss and Minions: Ensure the boss is pulled at least 40 yards away from the minions. Non-tank Group: Stay beyond 40 yards from the boss to avoid the AoE from Impending Doom.

Threat Management:

Disarm: Can be ignored.

Mind Control: Dispel immediately to regain control over the affected player.

Kill Order:

Focus fire on one minion and kill it as quickly as possible. Once the first minion is down, focus on the second minion until it's dead.

Phase 2: Boss Elimination

Positioning

Ranged and Healers: Spread out to minimize damage from Impending Doom if not dispelled.

Melee: Gather behind Lucifron. Move away from the group by 8 yards if you have the Impending Doom debuff and it is not dispelled.

If facing high pressure, use a Rejuvenation Potion, which attempts to dispel one magic, curse, poison, or disease effect every 5 seconds for 30 seconds.

Magmadar guide

Skills:

Mass Fear: Every 30 seconds, causes mass fear effect within 30 yards.

Berserk State: Every 30 seconds, the boss goes berserk, increasing damage and size.

Flame Patches: Creates a fire patch on the ground that deals continuous damage (DoT) to anyone who stands in it.

Flame Breath: Breathes a cone of fire in front of the boss within a 180-degree angle.

Tactics:

Tanks:

Tanks need to be vigilant and switch stances to counter fear each time. Try not to move positions unnecessarily. If there is too much fire for melee to deal damage, adjust slightly. For the Horde, use two tanks since this boss can be taunted. For the Alliance, have Dwarf Priests use Fear Ward.

Ranged DPS:

Since the fear range is 30 yards, stand beyond 30 yards to avoid getting feared and continue dealing damage.

Healers:

Split into two groups. One group heals the tank while the other stands beyond 35 yards to heal the raid. When the first group is feared, the second group takes over, alternating as needed. Shamans should place Tremor Totems in the healer groups.

Melee DPS:

Melee DPS should avoid standing in the fire patches when the fear timer is near.

Positioning:

Tanks should position the boss horizontally.

Key Points:

Hunters should use Tranquilizing Shot immediately when the boss goes berserk. The cooldown of Tranquilizing Shot is shorter than the berserk interval, so it should always be ready unless it misses. Equip gear with the highest hit rating possible.

If this boss proves very challenging, consider using Fire Resistance Potions to reduce healing pressure.

Gehennas Guide - Boss and Two Adds

Add Abilities:

Small Area Stun: Stuns targets in a small area.

Small Area AoE Damage: Deals AoE damage in a small area.

Boss Abilities:

Gehennas' Curse: Cast every 30 seconds, reducing healing effects by 75%. Mages and Druids must promptly dispel this from the main tank.

Shadow Bolt: Randomly targets a player, dealing 2000+ damage.

Rain of Fire: Deals approximately 1000 damage per wave.

Tactics:

Kill Order:

First Add - Second Add - Boss

Phase 1 (Add Kill Phase):

Tanks: MT holds the boss in place. Two off-tanks each take one add and pull them out of the boss's 30-yard range. The adds can stun in a small area, so use Free Action Potions if possible. Be mindful of abilities.

Healers: Druids dispel the curse on the tank promptly and avoid standing in the Rain of Fire.

Priests should cast Shadow Protection at the start.

Ranged DPS: Spread out to avoid clumping together. Avoid standing in the Rain of Fire and monitor threat levels, as tanks may get stunned and lose aggro.

Melee DPS: Avoid the Rain of Fire and manage threat levels.

Mages: Dispel curses on low-health players to aid healers. Prioritize dispelling the tank's curse promptly.

Phase 2 (Boss Kill Phase):

Tanks: If the Rain of Fire targets the melee group, quickly move the boss to provide a safe area for melee DPS. All other roles should follow the same guidelines as in Phase 1.

Garr Guide

Add Abilities:

Small Stone Elementals (8 Total):

Banishable: Can be banished.

Frenzy: If they are more than 30 yards away from the boss, they become enraged, increasing their damage and making them immune to banishment.

Self-Destruct: When the boss's health drops below 50%, the elementals within 30 yards self-destruct, dealing significant AoE damage and knocking players back.

Boss Abilities:

Ignite Mana: Causes nearby small elementals to self-destruct when the boss's health is below 50%, dealing significant AoE damage and knocking players back.

Slow: Casts a group-wide slow magic effect; dispel if possible.

Frenzy: When all 8 small elementals are killed, Garr enters a frenzy state, increasing his damage.

Tactics:

Preparation:

Marking: Before the fight, use Hunter's Mark and Priest's Mind Vision to clearly mark the targets. Ensure tanks and warlocks know their assigned elementals.

Initial Pull: Send a designated player to pull the boss. A tank, other warriors, and warlocks need to immediately pick up their assigned elementals.

A mage with Ice Block or a paladin with Divine Shield can pull the boss and then let the assigned players pick up the adds.

Role Assignments:

Hunters: Hunters can kite the assigned stone elementals around the room.

Warlocks: Warlocks should banish the stone elementals within 30 yards of the boss.

Tanks: Tanks pick up elementals and position them against the walls to avoid knockbacks affecting the raid.

Battle Strategy:

Kiting and Banish: Hunters kite as many elementals as possible. Warlocks banish elementals within 30 yards of the boss. Any remaining elementals are handled by offtanks.

Killing Elementals: Kill the stone elementals one by one, with tanks positioning them against walls to avoid knockback effects on the raid.

Boss Phase:

Once all elementals being tanked or banished are killed, focus on the boss. Pay close attention to Garr's health. When nearing 50%, ensure all players are away from the elementals to avoid the self-destruct AoE.

Finishing: After dealing with the boss, finish off any elementals still being kited by hunters.

Wipe Risks:

Health Monitoring: Watch the boss's health closely. When approaching 50%, stop DPS and ensure everyone is clear of the elementals.

Positioning: Ensure proper positioning to avoid excessive damage from the self-destruct AoE.

Baron Geddon Guide

Boss Abilities:

Inferno AoE: Deals increasing damage over time: 500, 1000, 2000 as the fight progresses.

Mana Burn: Randomly targets a player, burning 400 mana per second and dealing 400 damage per second. Does not affect warriors and rogues. Needs to be dispelled quickly, very mana-intensive.

Living Bomb: Randomly targets a player, causing them to explode after 5 seconds, dealing 3200+ damage to nearby players and launching the target into the air. The affected player should run to an empty area. Mages can use Ice Block and Paladins can use Divine Shield to remove the debuff. Healers should shield and heal the affected player to prevent death.

Tactics:

Positioning: General Position: Fight Baron Geddon in the hallway just past where the previous boss was defeated. Place healers in a position where they can reach the tank but are out of range of Geddon's Mana Burn.

Roles:

Tank: Early in the fight, if fire resistance is low, tanks should swap when Inferno AoE starts. With 320+ fire resistance, one tank can manage the entire fight. Maintain proper positioning throughout.

Melee DPS: Move away from the boss when Inferno AoE begins. Avoid running into the area designated for Living Bomb to prevent unnecessary deaths.

Ranged DPS: Mana-using classes should avoid Geddon's line of sight during Mana Burn to avoid getting the debuff.

Healers: Priests need to prioritize dispelling Mana Burn from healers and mana-dependent classes. Assign a designated area for Living Bomb, ensuring it's far from the main group.

Living Bomb Management:

Affected Players: Run to designated empty areas immediately upon receiving the Living Bomb debuff to avoid damaging others. Mages and Paladins should use Ice Block and Divine Shield, respectively, to remove the debuff.

Healing: Keep shields on affected players and heal them immediately to prevent death from the explosion.

Shazzrah Guide

Boss Abilities:

Arcane Explosion: Deals approximately 1000 damage, used almost continuously.

Shazzrah's Curse: Increases magic damage taken by 100%, must be removed quickly.

Blink: Teleports to a random location, usually in the direction he's facing.

Magic Buff: Reduces magic damage taken by 50%, should be dispelled quickly. Mages can use Detect Magic to keep track of this buff.

Tactics:

Positioning: Team Setup: Divide the raid into two groups. Use an equilateral triangle formation with the boss at point A and the two groups at points B and C. When the boss blinks to point B, the group at B should move to point A. Always move to the boss's previous position to maintain the triangle formation.

Roles:

Tank:Each point (A, B, and C) should have a designated tank. When Shazzrah blinks, the tank at the new location should immediately grab aggro and reposition the boss. Constantly communicate and keep the group informed about positioning.

Healers: Druids should prioritize dispelling Shazzrah's Curse, especially on tanks and melee DPS. Priests, Shamans, and Paladins should dispel the boss's magic buff as soon as possible. Each healer should focus on their designated group, ensuring tanks are always topped off.

Melee DPS: Do not overextend on DPS. Attack in bursts and move away before Arcane Explosion.

Ranged DPS: Maintain proper positioning and spread out to minimize damage from Arcane Explosion.

Mages: Keep Detect Magic on the boss to help other classes identify and dispel the magic buff.

Sulfuron Harbinger Guide

Minion Abilities:

Pain: Large-area damage-over-time ability that must be dispelled quickly. Warlocks can use Felhunter to assist.

Heal: The minions can heal each other. This ability can't be silenced by Priests but can be interrupted by Shamans (Earth Shock), Mages (Counterspell), and Rogues (Kick).

Boss Abilities:

Javelin Throw: Deals moderate damage, not a significant threat.

Berserk: The boss goes berserk at a certain health threshold, but by then the minions should be dead, and the main raid group can focus on him.

Tactics:

Pulling: A Mage with Ice Block should pull the boss and his minions. Tanks and Hunters should be ready to pick up their assigned targets.

Positioning: Form an equilateral triangle with the boss as the vertex. The sides should be longer than 40 yards. The tank group should tank the boss at his original position. The minion group should initially pull the three minions to point A, assigning dedicated dispellers and healers. The kill group should pull one minion at a time to point A, ensuring a proper interrupt chain is set up for their healing ability.

Roles:

Tanks: Main tank should use Shield Block to mitigate damage and avoid being one-shot. Off-tanks should handle the minions, coordinating smoothly when pulling and killing each minion.

Healers: Priests and Paladins should prioritize dispelling Pain from tanks. Initially cast Shadow Protection.

Ranged DPS: Stay sufficiently far from point B to reduce the chances of being affected by Pain.

Melee DPS: Rogues should save energy for interrupting the minions' Heal ability.

Warlocks: Use Felhunters to help dispel Pain.

Killing Minions:

Pull and kill one minion at a time. Ensure a dedicated interrupt chain for each minion to prevent healing. Once a minion is dead, pull the next one to point A and repeat the process until all minions are down.

Boss Phase:

Once all minions are dead, focus on the boss. Be prepared for the boss to go berserk at low health, but this shouldn't be a major issue with the full raid available.

Advanced Strategy:

If the raid is strong enough, consider pulling all minions together for an AOE kill. Ensure each minion has an assigned interrupt chain to manage their Heal ability during the AOE phase.

Golemagg the Incinerator Guide

Minion Abilities:

Immolated Minions: The two dogs are immune to all damage and can only be controlled by keeping them occupied. They cast a persistent damage-over-time (DoT) spell that also slows the target. The DoT can be dispelled.

Boss Abilities:

Armor Debuff: Golemagg applies a DoT that also reduces armor on all nearby players, stacking infinitely.

Earthquake: At 10% health, Golemagg will start casting a small-radius physical AoE dealing around 1500 damage.

Fireball: Deals around 1000 damage with an additional DoT component. Half of the Fireballs will target the tank.

Tactics:

Positioning: The main tank should position Golemagg at his starting location. Off-tanks (3T and 4T) should pull the two dogs away to a safe distance, maintaining at least 30 yards to avoid enraging them.

Roles:

Tanks: Two main tanks should alternate tanking Golemagg to manage the stacking armor debuff. When one tank's debuff falls off, they should taunt and take over, allowing the other to step out and reset their debuff.

Use Shield Wall during the final phase to mitigate damage. Off-tanks should keep the dogs occupied and at a safe distance from the raid and each other.

Melee DPS: Melee DPS will also get the armor debuff. When it stacks higher than five, they should step out of range to reset the debuff. They can attack the dogs during this time to maintain resources like rage.

Ranged DPS: Focus all efforts on Golemagg, staying out of melee range to avoid the armor debuff.

Healers: Healing assignments should ensure smooth transitions when tanks switch. Be prepared to ramp up healing at 10% health. Dispel the DoT from the dogs on tanks and others as necessary.

Combat Strategy:

Tank Rotation: The primary strategy revolves around tanks rotating to manage the armor debuff. The first tank holds Golemagg while the second tank waits at a safe distance. Once the first tank's debuff reaches a dangerous level or falls off, the second tank taunts Golemagg and takes over.

Handling Minions: The off-tanks keep the dogs occupied, preventing them from attacking the raid. Dogs should not be damaged as they are immune.

Dealing with Earthquake: At 10% health, Golemagg will start casting Earthquake. All players should be ready to move out of range of the AoE.

Dispelling: Dispel the slowing DoT from the dogs on tanks and other players to ensure mobility and reduce damage intake.

Overseer Ekxothus Guide

Minion Abilities:

8 Guards: Consisting of 4 Flamewalker Physicians and 4 Flamewalker Elites.

Physicians: Can heal allies and deal shadow damage. (Note: When only 4 guards are present, Physicians become immune to polymorph.)

Elites: Deal fire damage.

Boss Abilities:

Teleport: Teleports players to the center of the room, where they take continuous magma damage. Players teleported must quickly move away from the center.

Magic Reflect Shield: Applies a magic reflect shield to guards, reflecting magic damage, including polymorph.

Physical Reflect Shield: Applies a physical reflect shield to guards, reflecting 100-200 damage from physical attacks.

Tactics:

Key Points: Polymorph 4 Physicians to disable their healing and damage abilities. Have 4 tanks, each assigned to a Flamewalker Elite. Hunters should lead Ekxothus in circles around the room, using the slope to their advantage. When Ekxothus chases, hunters can use Feign Death to reset aggro, allowing another hunter to take over.

Combat Strategy:

Opening the Fight: Use a Mage's Ice Barrier or a Paladin's Divine Shield to initiate the fight. Hunters will help by picking up the boss and leading him in circles around the room. Mages should polymorph the Physicians. Ensure the hunter leading the boss does not let the healers accidentally pull aggro.

Tank Strategy:

With only 4 guards, ensure tanks correctly identify and handle their assigned enemies. All guards become immune to polymorph when there are only 4. Alternate between tanks as necessary to manage the bosses' damage and mechanics effectively.

Healing: Healers should stay attentive to their assigned tanks and be ready to handle incoming damage. Maintain awareness of the boss's teleport and ensure healing is provided promptly after players are teleported.

Melee DPS:

Avoid hitting targets with physical shields. Focus on interrupting healing and other critical abilities as needed.

Ranged DPS:

Watch for magic reflect shields and avoid casting spells that will be reflected. Focus on dealing damage to the bosses while managing aggro.

Teleport Management:

Players teleported to the center must quickly move out to avoid continuous magma damage. Ensure that there are no unhandled adds or remaining polymorphed Physicians when handling the teleportation.

Additional Tips:

Interrupts: Maintain a clear interrupt chain for both healing and other critical abilities to minimize incoming damage and manage the fight's flow.

Positioning: Keep the boss and minions properly positioned to avoid overlap of mechanics and to ensure that the damage is managed effectively.

Focus Fire: Prioritize killing the guards according to your strategy (e.g., 2 Elites, then 4, then 2).

Classic Fresh Ragnaros Guide

Boss Abilities:

Rag's Fury: Ragnaros yells every 25-27 seconds and deals an AOE knockback to the main tank within a 10-yard frontal cone.

Fire Purge: Ragnaros randomly targets a player with a large fireball every few seconds, dealing moderate AOE damage and potentially knocking players into the lava. This fireball has a 15-yard range.

Magma Burst: The lava in the room erupts randomly, dealing 1000+ fire damage to nearby players.

Tactics:

Positioning:

Distance: Range and healers should stay spread out by at least 15 yards. If positioning is tight, pair two ranged players at the same spot, but not directly in between others to avoid multiple players being hit by a single skill.

Tank Positioning: Tanks should be positioned with the main tank facing the boss while keeping in mind the wall behind. This allows tanks to manage knockbacks and maintain control of Ragnaros.

Healers: Position three healers in the back behind the boss, ensuring they are spread out and protected from knockbacks by the wall. Position another healer on the right rear of the boss for additional support.

Tank Strategy: Aim for high fire resistance, ideally around 400. This reduces the knockback effect and fire damage taken.

Taunt and Swap: The main tank should handle Ragnaros. If knocked back, the off-tank should immediately take over. Ensure the main tank returns quickly to continue tanking. Handling Small Fire Elementals: During transitions, use Shield Wall and Group Taunt to assist in managing small fire elementals (adds).

Ranged DPS: Spacing: Maintain a 15-yard distance to avoid overlapping damage from fireballs.

Movement: If knocked back, quickly reposition and climb back up from the lava if necessary.

Mage at Phase 2: Position on the left side of the boss near a slope and cast Blizzard to control the adds.

Druid at Phase 2: Use Tranquility from the slope to heal and control the adds.

Paladin Strategy: Use aggro-generating skills to manage small fire elementals (adds). Ensure they are kept under control during fights.

Melee DPS: Avoid Knockbacks: Move away from the boss during knockbacks. If a tank is knocked back, melee DPS should shift focus to the boss or handle the small fire elementals.

Transition Phases:

Small Fire Elementals: Do not kill the last small fire elemental immediately. Position everyone properly before killing the last one to ensure a smooth transition back to Phase 1.

Fire Resistance Potions: Use fire resistance potions before entering the transition phases to reduce damage and ease healing.

[Ragnaros Notes]

- Fire Resistance: If you haven't reached the fire resistance level I mentioned earlier, don't attempt the fight.

- FR83 Buff: Before engaging Ragnaros, make sure to get the FR83 buff from UBRS. The more people who get the buff, the better. You can organize it by having 25 people stand outside and 15 people inside, with one person leaving and another entering to get the buff.

- Consumables: Melee and priests should consume a fire resistance potion before the fight. If there aren't enough, at least let rogues use it. Items like Blasting Powder, Night Dragon's Breath, and Lungs Cocktail are very useful; it's best if everyone has them.

- Positioning: Ranged players should spread out in a layered formation rather than standing in a line. Don't assume standing by the wall is safe. Standing near the magma close to Ragnaros may get you thrown into the lava where you can swim out, while standing against the back wall may lead you into the rear lava, from which you can't swim out and must circle back. Melee should stay at the maximum attack range to avoid Ragnaros' Fury. No one should be within 15 yards of the tank and off-tank.

- Ragnaros' Fury: With enough practice, deaths during Ragnaros' appearance phase should be rare. The only likely deaths occur when Ragnaros' Fury causes aggro issues.

Solution: After Ragnaros' Fury, all melee should stop using abilities for three seconds. The main tank should keep 50 rage. As soon as Ragnaros' Fury is cast, immediately taunt and use Rend and Revenge to avoid aggro issues. If aggro problems persist, have the affected player move back, outside of Ragnaros' physical attack range.

- Sons of Flames: Using AoE spells from mages is the easiest method. Killing them one by one is inefficient. With five to six mages, you can clear a group of Sons of Flames in about 10 seconds if the tank holds them. Group taunts are effective. Avoid randomly fearing Sons of Flames and don't freeze or banish them among the crowd.

- Fire Elementals Strategy: If your team can reduce Ragnaros to below 50% health before he calls the Sons of Flames, you can handle them all in one go. Since they can be executed at below 20%, it's quick and efficient, and a skilled team can handle them without deaths. If you need to handle two waves of Sons, prepare a large quantity of potions in advance and drink mana potions as soon as they're off cooldown. If more than five players die before Ragnaros goes down, the reduced damage output can make it challenging to manage the Sons of Flames.

- Resurrection: Avoid overcomplicating revives during the fight. Using zone-in and out revives is considered an exploit, and OOC resurrections are not applicable for Ragnaros.
