Sockets and Socket Bonuses: The Foundation

Sockets appear on high-end Outland gear, typically 1-3 per item. Shift-Right-Click an item to access the socketing interface. Matching a gem's color to the socket activates the Socket Bonus.

Socket Color

Matches These Gems

Example Bonus

Red

Red, Orange, Purple

+4 Spell Damage

Yellow

Yellow, Orange, Green

+4 Hit Rating

Blue

Blue, Purple, Green

+4 Stamina

Don't be a slave to the bonus. If the socket bonus is weak (e.g., +2 Spirit) but your spec needs raw power, slotting a Red gem into a Blue socket is often the "pro" move. In Phase 1, ignore weak bonuses (+2 Spirit)—stack raw +SP reds over blues.

Primary, Secondary, and Prismatic Gems

  • Primary Gems: Pure colors (Red, Yellow, Blue). They offer the highest concentration of a single stat.

  • Secondary Gems: Blended colors (Orange, Purple, Green). These count as both colors for socket bonuses and Meta Gem requirements but offer split stats.

  • Prismatic Gems: These match any socket color and provide all-around resistances (Void Spheres).

Meta Gems: Elite Head Slot Power

Exclusive to certain helms, Meta Gems deliver unique effects (like +3% Critical Damage) but require specific gem counts across all your gear to activate.

TBC Classic Anniversary FAQs on Gems and Sockets

How do socket bonuses activate in TBC Classic Anniversary?

Socket bonuses trigger only when the gem color matches the socket. Dual-color gems (Purple, Orange, Green) match two different socket types. Shift-Right-Click the item to insert gems. Tip: Prioritize the bonus only if the stat provided is worth more than the loss of a primary stat gem.

What is the best way to activate Meta Gems?

Meta gems require a certain number of gems of specific colors socketed in your gear. Use secondary (hybrid) gems to meet these requirements efficiently. For example, a Green gem counts as both a Yellow and a Blue gem for Meta activation.

Can gems be removed from sockets once placed?

No. Once a gem is socketed, it cannot be removed. You can only overwrite it with a new gem, which permanently destroys the previous one. Plan your gear upgrades carefully to avoid wasting expensive epic gems.

What are the optimal gems for Warrior Protection in TBC Anniversary?

Tanks should focus on the Powerful Earthstorm Diamond (+18 Stamina). For regular sockets, stack Solid Star of Elune (+15 Stamina) or Enduring Talasite (+5 Defense, +7 Stamina) to reach the 490 Defense cap while maximizing HP.

How to acquire epic gems cheaply in early phases?

Farm reputation with The Consortium to unlock epic gem cutting designs. Additionally, participate in Heroic dungeons to find unique "Heroic Gems" that often have better stats than standard rare gems found on the Auction House.

When should I upgrade to T6+ epic gems?

You should start using epic gems (like Crimson Spinels) during Phase 3 (Black Temple / Hyjal). Prior to that, rare gems (Blue quality) are the standard. Save your gold for the final tier of gear where stat density is highest.
