Star Citizen still feels massive when you first drop in. The good news is that a few smart early moves make the difference between constant frustration and actually enjoying the universe.
Alpha 4.8 "Tactical Strike" brought better loadout persistence, smoother refueling, and new cooperative fleet content. You can read the full official patch notes on the RSI Comm-Link.
Once in the Persistent Universe, pick Stanton and Lorville as your starting point. It remains one of the better beginner locations with solid shops and mission access. Wake up, open MobiGlas with F1, handle the basic eat/drink/helmet steps (Alt + H), and follow the markers.
Buy the multi-tool + tractor beam, a basic sidearm, and spare mags. Equip at the nearby terminals. The tutorial covers ship retrieval and first flight — but pay close attention to the power triangle. It matters more than most beginners think. Push power to weapons and shields early; you can safely reduce radar and extra coolers in a starter Aurora.
One thing the tutorial doesn't emphasize enough is how important basic flight discipline is in the Aurora. Don't hold W constantly in fights — it makes you predictable and easy to hit. Instead, hold Space to strafe upward while tapping Q or E to roll. This keeps your movement unpredictable and helps you dodge incoming fire much more effectively. Also, learn to manage your speed limiter (Left Alt + mouse wheel) so you don't overshoot targets or slam into stations.
Flight takes some getting used to. Use NAV mode (B) for quantum, switch to SCM for combat. Hold space and tap Q/E to roll while strafing — this one habit makes you much harder to hit. Target with T, lead your shots at the pip, and remember middle mouse for missiles, H for flares.
Set your medical spawn at a station clinic right away. Too many new players lose hours (and backpack items) from repeated deaths. Keep medpens and a medical gun handy.
Power management, fast inventory handling, and claiming are what separate smooth play from painful sessions.
Power management becomes very intuitive once you get the hang of it. Hold F and look at the MFD to adjust the triangle. In the Aurora, you can safely pull power from radar and one cooler to max out weapons and shields. More weapon power means significantly more shots before they need to recharge, while stronger shields let you survive mistakes in early dogfights. This single habit dramatically improves your survival rate.

Always store your ship properly and save loadouts at ASOP terminals.
In 4.8, vehicle loadouts are much more reliable — a real quality-of-life improvement. The refueling and docking changes also make support play less frustrating.
Tactical Strike Groups in Nyx is the big new cooperative activity. It favors mixed fleets and on-site logistics. Bringing at least one dedicated resupply ship noticeably increases success rate. A lot of groups still go full combat and wonder why they wipe. For Tactical Strike Groups, preparation goes beyond just bringing guns. Make sure you practice quick refueling and mutual docking — the new systems in 4.8 make these much smoother, but they still require practice. Having one player focus on logistics (refueling and resupplying both ships and teammates on the ground) often decides whether the group succeeds or wipes. Pure combat loadouts are tempting but rarely optimal in longer missions.
The UltiFlex Crossbow is worth trying if you like stealthy bunker runs.

Spend your first 100-200k aUEC smartly on components rather than a new ship.
Don't forget small but useful keybinds: Alt + H to remove your helmet so you can eat and drink properly, F4 to toggle third-person view when maneuvering in hangars, and Tab to ping for better visibility in dark areas. Also, after buying new components like a better quantum drive, always unequip the old one first in the Vehicles menu, equip the new one, then save the full loadout at the terminal. This ensures you get everything back when claiming the ship.
Use a referral code during or right after account creation, finish the tutorial quickly, and don't die with a full backpack.
Lorville in Stanton is still a strong choice — convenient shops and mission hubs.
