PoE2 Trial of Chaos: A Comprehensive Guide

by        Game: Path of Exile 2 Guide

Welcome, exiles, to the ultimate guide to the Trial of Chaos in Path of Exile 2 (PoE2), one of the three Ascension Trials introduced in Act 3. This trial, a gauntlet inspired by Path of Exile 1's Ultimatum mechanic, tests your mettle through a series of increasingly difficult rooms filled with monsters and traps. Here's everything you need to know to beat it.

Trial of Chaos mechanics

Trial of Chaos is divided into 10 trials or rounds, each with its own unique challenges. When you start or complete a room, you'll find an altar at the entrance to the next room, displaying a potential reward and three modifiers to choose from. These modifiers add levels of difficulty to the quest, but also increase the potential reward. At this point, you have two choices: complete the trial and collect your rewards, or continue in search of greater loot by selecting a new modifier.

Here are the possible objectives you may encounter:
Defeat all monsters: Clear all enemies in the area to proceed.
Survive until the timer runs out: Stand your ground for 90 seconds until the Corruption Dais fills.
Escort the statue: Stay close to the statue to move it forward, spawning enemies along the way.
Collect the Soul Cores: Collect Vaal Soul Cores and bring them to a stone altar, taking increasing physical damage over time while holding them.

The final trial always pits you against one of three random bosses, with a Well available beforehand for preparation. Failure of any objective or death will result in the loss of all accumulated rewards. Notably, the area has a unique modifier where items have a 10% chance of dropping corrupted.

Monsters in the Trial

The Trial is home to a variety of creatures, each with their own unique abilities:

Chaos Zealot
Bloodrite Guardian
Bloodrite Priest
Cerebral Bat
Scute Lizard
Petulant Stonemaw
Stoneclad Gorilla
Saurian Servant
Crested Behemoth

Each type of monster adds to the variety and challenge of the trial, requiring different strategies to deal with.

Trial of Chaos bosses

The Trial concludes with a battle against one of the following formidable bosses:

Bahlak the Sky Seer: A lightning-fast boss with devastating aerial attacks.
Uxmal the Beastlord: A brute force opponent with powerful melee and chaotic spells.
Chetza the Feathered Plague: Known for her venomous attacks and wide area damage.

Each boss presents unique challenges and requires specific tactics to defeat.

The Trial Master and Exclusive Drops

After successfully completing a Trial of Chaos, you can challenge the Trialmaster by bringing three fates to his tower. The Trialmaster will drop exclusive, unique items upon defeat:

Glimpse of Chaos
Mahuxotl's Machination
Forge of Hate
Zerphi's Genesis

These items are not only powerful, but also add a layer of exclusivity to the rewards of this trial.

Trial of Chaos Rewards

Rewards from the Trial of Chaos are cumulative. Once you have completed or opted out of the trial, you can claim your rewards at the altar. These include corrupted rare and unique items, various currencies such as Vaal Orbs and Soul Cores. In addition, Inscribed Ultimatums may have affixes that allow the rewards to be doubled upon successful completion by sacrificing certain items.

List of trial modifiers
Here are some of the modifiers you may encounter, each adding a unique twist to the trial:

Chaotic Monsters: Gain additional Chaos damage.

Each modifier adds complexity and requires strategic selection based on your character's build and strengths.

List of Wagers
Inscribed Ultimatums can roll modifiers that allow you to wager certain amounts of currency for a double return if successful:

Partying in the Trial

If you undertake the trial with others, each player will receive their own set of rewards. If a player fails, they lose their rewards, but the trial continues for others. Between waves, players vote on which modifier to add next, with a majority vote deciding, or a random selection in the event of a tie.

The Trial of Chaos in PoE2 is not only a test of skill, but also a test of strategy, requiring players to balance risk and reward. Whether you're farming for gear, searching for unique items, or aiming for Ascendancy points, understanding the mechanics, monsters, bosses, and how to manage modifiers will greatly increase your success rate. Remember, every decision in the process can lead to victory or defeat, making it an exciting part of the PoE2 experience. Prepare well, choose wisely, and may the chaos work in your favour, Exiles!
