PoE2 Damage Point Calculation

Path of Exile 2 (PoE2) introduces a complex damage system that can be daunting for new and returning players alike. Here's a guide to help you navigate the intricacies of damage calculation and ensure your builds are both effective and efficient.

Basic Damage Concepts:

Base Damage: The starting point of any damage calculation, it's what your skills or weapons do before any modifiers are applied.
Increases & Decreases (inc/reduce): These are additive modifiers that directly affect your base damage. Increases add to your damage, while decreases subtract from it.
More & Less: Multiplicative modifiers that increase or decrease your damage after the increase/decrease has been calculated. They are the key to significant damage boosts.
Local vs. global modifiers: Local modifiers only affect specific equipment, such as a weapon's damage increase, while global modifiers affect your overall damage output.

Damage Calculation Formula:

The primary damage formula in PoE2 is:
Dps= (Base Damage + Additive Bonuses - Additive Penalties) × (1 + Increases - Decreases) × (1 + More) × (1 - Less)
Understanding this formula will help you optimise your build by balancing different types of modifiers.

Damage Conversion & Gain:

Conversion: The conversion of one type of damage to another, such as physical to elemental. In PoE2, only the final damage type benefits from the increase, unlike in PoE1 where intermediate conversions could stack.
Gain: Adds additional damage based on existing damage, treated as a separate calculation. This is particularly useful in builds where you want to take advantage of multiple damage types.

Critical Strikes:

Critical Damage Bonus: Replaces the old Critical Strike multiplier from PoE1, now with its own set of modifiers. Understanding how to stack critical damage is crucial for crit-focused builds.
Crit Chance: Building enough crit chance to make every hit a crit can greatly increase your damage. The document provides formulas such as
Crit Chance Increase Needed = (100% / (Base Crit + Added Crit)) - 1

Effective More and Marginal Gains:

Effective More: When evaluating modifiers, calculating Effective More helps you understand their true impact on your damage.
Effective gain = (Damage after modifier / Original damage) - 1
Marginal gains: As you stack more of the same type of modifier, each additional point provides less benefit, so balancing your modifiers is key.

Weapon and Equipment Selection:

Physical vs. Elemental Weapons: Physical weapons often have a higher base damage due to local modifiers and quality bonuses, making them preferable for damage-conversion builds.
Total gain = ①×②×③×(④×⑤)
①=weapon inc ÷ no weapon inc, ①=weapon inc if other parts have no inc
②=Sum of elemental inc on weapon ÷(1+sum of original inc)
③=(1+(100%+bludgeoning damage bonus on weapon)×(1+existing bludgeoning damage buff))÷(1+100%×(1+existing bludgeoning damage buff))-1
④ = Benefit after leveling ÷ Damage benefit at current level - 1
⑤ = sum of the weapon's attack speed increase

Jewels and sockets:

Optimal use: Choosing the right jewels or sockets for crit damage or elemental gain can dramatically increase the effectiveness of your build.

Build specific considerations:

For offensive builds: We use a Monk build as an example to show how physical weapons can be converted entirely to elemental damage for maximum effect.
For spell builds: Spells are simpler in PoE2, where stacking Gain and Increase on the right elements can result in explosive damage.

Weapon affix selection:

Benefit Calculation: You'll be given formulas to compare the effectiveness of weapon affixes, such as
Total Weapon Benefit = Point Damage × Element Increase × Critical Damage × (Skill Level Benefit × Attack Speed)
