How to use runes
Finding gear with sockets
Before you can use a rune, you need gear with an empty socket. Not all equipment has sockets by default, but you can create them.
Socketing runes
Weapons (Martial): Socketing a rune into a weapon will usually give you an offensive bonus, such as increased damage or attack speed.
Armour: Socketing a rune into armour gives defensive bonuses such as increased armour, evasion or resistance.
Choose your equipment wisely
Rarity matters: Prefer to use runes on higher rarity equipment (yellow or above) to maximise their effect. If you have extras, blue (magical) gear can be used as a testing ground.
Socket Crafting

Break down gear that already has sockets at the Salvage Bank in town. This will give you Artificer's Orbs.

RNG and drops
Runes drop from monsters and bosses throughout the game, with higher quality runes appearing in later acts.
