Path of Exile 2's Patch 0.2.0g, deployed on May 2, 2025, aimed to tackle one of the game's biggest pain points: unrewarding loot. After the rocky launch of Dawn of the Hunt, Grinding Gear Games (GGG) promised a major overhaul to make drops more exciting and progression smoother. Having played the patch extensively, I'm here to break down what's changed, what's working, If you're in the mood for more ARPG insight or want to gear up for your next PoE 2 run, bookmark this page and head on over to the store for some epic gaming gear. What Patch 0.2.0g Brings to the Table

Patch 0.2.0g focuses on reworking item rarity, boosting boss and chest rewards, and improving endgame systems like Corrupted Nexuses. Despite a bumpy rollout - cancelled due to a bug that deleted skill gems and then reinstated after a fix - the patch has given players hope. Here's a quick rundown of the key changes:
Improved Loot Quality: Monsters now rely more on item rarity than item quantity, reducing junk drops. Tier 2 rares are 4x more likely to drop, and Tiers 3-5 are 30% more likely to drop with better mods. Magic items (tier 2+) drop 5x more, making them great for crafting.
Boss and Wisp Buffs: Unique bosses guarantee a rare item (first kill in campaign, every kill in maps). Azmerian Wisp possessed monsters also drop guaranteed rares with increased rarity, making them worth hunting.
Chest Upgrades: Rare chests guarantee rare items, magic chests guarantee magic items, and bronze chests now match the quality of rare chests in the campaign. Silver and gold chests have increased rarity and quantity.
Currency and Endgame: Exalts, Regals, and Divines drop more frequently. Systems such as Ritual, Expedition, and Delirium are more rewarding, with double the artefact drops and 50% more exotic coins in Expeditions.
Corrupted Nexus Tweaks: Each Nexus now grants 5 Atlas Passive Points (up from 1), and they're easier to spot, speeding up progress.

Campaign: A Step Forward, But Not a Leap

The campaign (Acts 1–3) feels noticeably better. Rare and socketed items drop more frequently, reducing the need to run to vendors for upgrades. Tiered rares and magical items appear as early as Act 2, and rare chests are now a highlight, consistently dropping rare items. Quest rewards, like Artificer's Orbs, are more reliable, adding a small dopamine hit.
However, currency remains a sticking point. Exalts and regals are still too rare, leaving players burning through Artificer's Orbs quickly. Without enough currency, you're at the mercy of the RNG for weapon upgrades. Hitting a damage slump - like clinging to an Act 1 weapon in Act 2 - is frustrating. The lack of player agency is real; you're often stuck praying for a vendor to stock the right base or a lucky drop.

Endgame: Juicier, But Not Perfect

In the endgame, the patch shines brighter. Currency drops are up, with players finding Divines and Exalts more regularly, especially when juicing maps. Rare items are more common, and some players have snatched usable gloves and boots off the ground - a rarity in pre-PoE 2. Rituals feel improved, with more chances of an audience with the king, and wisps are slightly more rewarding, though not exciting enough to hunt aggressively.
Still, problems remain. Wisps, even when fully spec'd, don't feel juicy enough to justify a large investment. The crafting system lacks cohesion, forcing reliance on RNG or trading for upgrades. Currency drops, while better, aren't plentiful enough to comfortably juice maps with Exalts or Alchemy Orbs without feeling wasteful.
The Bigger Picture:Player agency and power A core problem with PoE 2 is that too much player power comes from gear, especially in the campaign. If your drops don't line up, you're stuck in a damage rut, and the skill tree or support gems don't compensate enough. This lack of agency - where you're locked into sub-optimal gear due to scarce currency or runes - can lead to angry quit moments, like saving up Exalts for a better base, only to sniff at the craft.
GGG could fix this by redistributing power to the skill tree and supporting gems, making characters less gear-dependent. A crafting bank or a more deterministic rune system would also allow players to chase upgrades without feeling like they're gambling.

Did GGG Save PoE 2?

Patch 0.2.0g is a solid step forward, not a saviour. The campaign is more rewarding, the endgame feels more alive, and systems like Ritual and Nexus are smoother. Community feedback reflects this, with players returning to test the changes and reporting better loot hauls. However, the scarcity of currency, lack of control over crafting, and gear-heavy power scaling keep it from being a home run. GGG's responsiveness is promising, but the next patch (0.3.0) needs to double down on player agency and currency drops to truly “save” PoE 2.

FAQs About PoE 2 Patch 0.2.0g

How does Patch 0.2.0g improve campaign loot?

Rare and socketed items drop more often, tiered rares appear in Act 2, and chests guarantee rares or magical items. Currency such as Exalts is still too rare.

Are endgame rewards better now?

Yes, currency (Divines, Exalts) and rare items drop more frequently. Rituals and expeditions are more rewarding, but wisps require more work.

Why was the patch initially rolled back?

A bug deleted skill gems on login due to a support gem type ID change. GGG fixed the bug and reissued the patch on 2 May 2025.

Does the patch fix crafting issues?

No, crafting is still heavily dependent on the RNG and scarce runes. A deterministic system, such as a crafting bank, is needed for more control.

Should I return to PoE 2 after this patch?

If the loot issues have put you off, give it a go. The campaign and endgame are more rewarding, but expect some frustration with currency and crafting.
