Understanding the Mapping System

First of all, mapping in POE 2 isn't like it was in POE 1. Here, the Waystones set the difficulty level, but the actual map layout you'll run is determined by The Actual Map. Each node on this map shows you what's in store: bosses, league mechanics, and special modifiers such as irradiation and corruption, which add +1 to monster levels. These are your golden tickets in mapping, so let's focus on maximising them.

Strategic Mapping

To get the most out of your mapping experience, you need to be smart about where you spend your waystones. Don't just throw your highest level waystones at any old node; you want to find the nodes with bosses and corruption. Use precursor tablets in tower maps to add mechanics and buffs to surrounding maps, especially irradiation. This is where the magic happens.

Imagine you're looking at a map with several towers around a juicy cluster of corrupted bosses. That's where you want to set up camp. Circle around that area, use the mid-level waystones to set up, and then hit it hard when you're ready to farm. This strategy isn't just about efficiency, it's about making sure you don't waste your resources.

Troubleshooting common problems

Sustaining Waystones
If you're struggling to keep your waystone supply up, here are some tips:
Juice Properly: Use irradiation tablets and focus on building your farm carefully, as described above.
Mod Your Waystones: At least 2-mod, ideally 4-mod waystones. Alch them or buy them from the currency exchange.
Atlas Investment: Spend some points on atlas nodes that help sustain waystones.
Survive: Dying less means losing less progress. Focus on staying alive.
Match Difficulty: Use safer waystones for valuable nodes. Don't overdo it with hard mods on already challenging maps.
Utilize Hard Mods: Use them in less critical areas or on easier map layouts to farm more waystones.
Boss Focus: Bosses drop lots of waystones. Save and juice these nodes with high-tier maps but keep the mods manageable.

Dealing with death
When you're dying too often:
Identify Threats: Figure out what's killing you (swarms, on-death effects, etc.) and adjust your gear or resistances accordingly.
Read Your Waystones: Some mods are easier than others. Play accordingly.
Choose Your Maps Wisely: Don't put hard waystones in maps with challenging layouts. Opt for open maps where you can control engagements.

Making Mapping Fun
If the game's not fun:
Upgrade Gear: Sometimes better gear is all you need. Check the trade site for affordable upgrades.
Scrap for Currency: Quality and socketed items can be scrapped for currency that's still valuable.
Know Your Limits: If you're dying too much, you're in content that's too hard for your build. Either tweak your build or drop down.

Improving Your Build
If your build is fundamentally weak:
Defensive Layering: POE 2 requires multiple layers of defense. Look at your gear, ascendancy, and skill tree for defensive investments.
Use Anoints: Anointments can provide significant boosts. Look for cost-effective options.
Build Evaluation: If your build isn't working, it may be time for a serious rethink or rebuild.
