PoE 2: Item Rarity & Upgrade Guide

In Path of Exile 2, the art of crafting and upgrading equipment is crucial to enhancing your character's abilities. Here's an in-depth guide to navigating the item rarity system and upgrading your items effectively.

Normal (White): Items have no additional modifiers, only their base stats.

Magic (Blue): These items have one or two random modifiers, making them slightly better than normal items.

Rare (yellow): Can have up to six modifiers, split into three prefixes and three suffixes, which significantly increase the power of the item.

Unique (orange): These items have fixed, often powerful modifiers that can define or drastically improve certain builds.

Orb of Transmutation: Transforms a normal item into a magical one with an additional modifier.

Orb of Augmentation: Adds another modifier to a magical item, bringing the total to two.

Regal Orb: Makes a magical item rare and adds a third modifier.

Add one of the remaining modifiers to a rare item, up to six. Each Exalted Orb adds a random modifier, making it a gamble but potentially rewarding.

Essences allow you to control the first modifier added to an item when it is converted from normal to magical. They come in different types, each adding a specific type of mod (e.g. physical damage, health, elemental resistances).

These allow targeted crafting by affecting the pool of possible modifiers. For example, using a Prismatic Fossil can increase the likelihood of getting resistances on your item.

Although the specifics for PoE2 are still being worked out, Harvest Crafting from PoE1 allowed for precise modifications such as adding or removing specific modifiers or even changing item bases.

Catalysts add quality to items by increasing certain modifiers. For example, a physical catalyst will increase the physical damage of a ring or amulet.

Orb of Alchemy: Can instantly turn a normal item into a rare item with four random modifiers, skipping the magic phase.

Orb of Chaos: Re-rolls all modifiers on a rare item, potentially giving better or worse results, useful for refining equipment.

Choose the right base: Look for high level items for better stat rolls. 

Use the right currency at the right time: Don't rush into using high-value currencies such as Exalted Orbes on items without potential. 

Essence Crafting: Begin crafting with essences to control initial modifiers, especially if you are targeting resistances or specific damage types.

Experiment with fossils: Combine different fossils to narrow down the types of modifiers you're likely to get. 

Quality matters: Use Catalysts to boost item quality to 20% for a significant stat boost. Keep in mind that Breach Rings can go up to 50% quality, making them prime candidates for this treatment.

Corrupt at your own risk: Vaal Orbs can change an item in unpredictable ways, potentially adding sockets or improving modifiers, but they can also ruin an item. Use them on items you're willing to risk.

Harvest for precision: When available, use the Harvest mechanic for precise modifications, but be prepared for it to be a limited resource.
