Path of Exile 2 introduces a revamped expedition mechanic that combines familiar elements with new twists. Here's everything you need to know about Artifact, logbooks, and how to use them to your advantage.

What is Expedition in PoE 2?

Expedition encounters take place on maps where you'll find debris, skulls, flags and piles of dirt. Players can use explosives to open up these areas, revealing monsters, treasures and unique Expedition currency:

Explosives: Players can place up to five explosives in POE2, which will detonate sequentially, affecting all remains within their blast radius and modifying the monsters and chests they unearth.

Runic monsters: Marked by a skull on a stick, these can drop Expedition Logbooks and other rewards.

Expedition Artifact

Artifacts are the currency of Expedition, used to trade with certain NPCs for crafting or gambling items:

Artifact Types:

Broken Circle Artifact - Used with Gwennen for gambling on weapons.

Black Scythe Artifact - Used by Tujen to trade jewellery and belts.

Order Artifact - Rog uses this to trade armour and shields.

Sun Artifact - Can be traded to Dannig for other Artifact types.

Other expedition currency:

Exotic Coinage: Exclusive to Tujen, used to reroll NPC inventories for potentially better items.

Usage:

Gwennen: Offers items that can become rare, magical or unique.

Tujen: Focuses on currency and jewellery, with a haggling mechanic.

Rog: Crafts items, allowing you to choose how to upgrade or modify existing equipment.

Dannig: Exchanges Artifact and occasionally provides logbooks.

Acquisition:

Artifact drop from rune monsters or excavated chests during expedition encounters. They are not collected automatically in POE2 and must be picked up manually.

Expedition Logbooks

Logbooks enhance the Expedition experience by providing large scale dig sites:

Obtaining Logbooks: These are dropped by rune monsters or can be bought from Dannig. Certain remnants can increase the drop rate.

Start an expedition with logbooks:

Bring a logbook to Dannig in your hideout to choose from a list of sites, each with modifiers that affect rewards or difficulty. This action opens portals through your map device.

Mechanics:

Logbooks are not craftable, but can be modified with currency such as chaos orbs for area modifiers or blast orbs for specific zone modifiers.

Logbooks of higher rarity offer a better quantity and quality of drops, but are more challenging due to stacked remnant effects.

Rewards:

Excavated chests and monster kills provide loot, with rune monsters offering the best rewards. The nature of these rewards can be influenced by the remnants you choose to activate.

Underground areas: These are special areas within logbook sites, marked by unique icons, that offer additional loot.

Faction influence: Each logbook site can be influenced by one of the four Expedition factions, changing the type of Artifact dropped.

Strategies for Expedition:

Mod Management: Be aware of the modifiers you choose to activate; some can significantly increase difficulty, but also reward quality.

Artifact Use: Use the right Artifact for each NPC to get the most out of your encounters. Remember that in POE2, Artifact are specific to each NPC's function.

Logbook selection: Pick locations based on modifiers for the best loot potential without overpowering your build.

Rerolling: Use Exotic Coinagewisely to reroll NPC inventories for potentially better items or crafting options.

Changes in PoE2:

Artifact types are streamlined; one artifact per NPC function rather than multiple tiers.

Manual picking up of artifacts, unlike in POE1 where they were automatically collected.
