PoE 2 Early Access Review: Combat & Changes

by        Game: Path of Exile 2 Guide        Tags: PoE 2 Early Access Impressions

Path of Exile 2 represents a significant departure from its predecessor, evolving from a planned expansion to a full sequel. This analysis examines the key changes and features observed in the Early Access version, in order to provide an objective assessment of the current state of the game.

Core gameplay enhancements

Paradigm shift in tactical combat: The introduction of a dodge roll fundamentally changes the dynamics of combat. This mechanic requires more deliberate player input, requiring strategic positioning, precise timing, and careful observation of enemy attack patterns. This shift moves the game away from a purely reactive, spam-to-win style to a more proactive and engaging combat experience. Enemy AI has also been adjusted to include more telegraphed attacks, further emphasising the importance of player skill and tactical awareness.
Streamlined character progression: While the complex passive skill tree remains a core element, the early game experience has been streamlined. This addresses a common criticism of the original Path of Exile, where new players often felt overwhelmed by the sheer number of choices and the potential for build disrupting mistakes. The changes aim to provide a smoother learning curve without sacrificing the depth and complexity available to experienced players who wish to engage in intricate build crafting.
Decoupled Skill System: The skill gem system, a hallmark of the original game, has undergone a significant overhaul. Skill gems are no longer tied to equipment slots. Instead, players manage skills through a dedicated interface and unlock them using "uncut skill gems". This allows for greater flexibility in build creation and gives players access to a wider range of skills earlier in the game. The introduction of Spirit Gems and the associated Spirit stat further enhances build customisation, particularly for summoner and buff-focused builds.

Other key features and observations

Visual and environmental overhaul: Path of Exile 2 features a significant visual upgrade, with detailed environments and improved character and enemy models. The game world is more visually diverse, with each area offering a unique aesthetic and atmosphere. This contributes to a more immersive and engaging gameplay experience.
Enemy and boss design: Enemy variety has been greatly expanded, with each area introducing new enemy types with distinct behaviours and attack patterns. Boss encounters have also received significant attention, with unique mechanics that require strategic approaches.
Story and narrative: The game features a new storyline, but the narrative remains secondary to the core gameplay loop. Players are free to engage with the story at their own pace, prioritising exploration and combat if they choose.
Technical performance and stability: The Early Access build has generally been reported to be stable and performant, with few major bugs. However, minor technical issues such as occasional clipping and dialogue overlap have been observed.
Online Infrastructure: Path of Exile 2 requires a persistent online connection, even for solo play. This raises potential concerns about server stability, latency, and the impact on the game experience, particularly during periods of peak player activity.
Monetisation model: While the developers have indicated that the monetisation model will be similar to the original Path of Exile's free-to-play system, details remain limited. The impact of monetisation on the overall gameplay experience will need to be fully assessed upon release.

The impact of Early Access and the future

The Early Access period provides valuable feedback to developers and allows players to experience the game in its current state. The decision to participate in Early Access depends on individual preferences and tolerance for potential bugs and unfinished features. The current build offers a significant amount of content, including multiple acts and endgame systems.

Thank you for reading

Path of Exile 2 represents a significant evolution of the ARPG formula, with notable improvements to combat, character progression, and skill customisation. Visual and environmental enhancements also contribute to a more immersive and engaging experience. While concerns remain about the online-only nature and long-term implications of the monetisation model, the Early Access build demonstrates a promising foundation for a strong entry in the ARPG genre.
