Choosing Your Faction: The First Big Decision

Choosing a faction is one of the first significant decisions you'll face in New World. After washing ashore on the mysterious island of Aeternum, you are given the choice between three factions:

The Covenant – A faction devoted to the light and “The Spark,” embodying religious zeal and righteousness.
The Syndicate – The intellectual and science-driven faction dedicated to uncovering the island's secrets through knowledge.
The Marauders – A militaristic faction that believes in power through strength and battle.

Each faction comes with its own lore, philosophy, and playstyle, but don't stress too much about your choice—you can switch factions later if you change your mind, though this comes with a cooldown period. Completing the faction questline is necessary to officially join a faction and begin participating in faction-based PvP activities.

Open World PvP and Influence Races

Once you've joined a faction, the real fun begins. Open-world PvP allows players to engage in combat with members of opposing factions when “flagged” for PvP. Flagging yourself enables you to fight any flagged members of opposing factions in the open world, adding a constant element of danger and excitement.

A key mechanic in faction-based PvP is the influence race. This system encourages players to complete PvP missions and capture towers in various territories to push their faction's influence. The goal is to put the territory into conflict, setting the stage for a War. Influence races can be chaotic and exhilarating as factions vie for control, with both defenders and attackers engaging in intense combat.

Influence is earned by completing PvP missions, and controlling towers (strategic points on the map) increases the amount of influence earned for your faction. Each territory has three towers, and battles around these points are crucial for gaining control.

Wars: The Ultimate Faction Showdown

For many players, Wars are the pinnacle of PvP content in New World. Wars are massive 50v50 battles between factions, where the attackers must capture three points outside of a fort before launching a full-scale siege on the fort itself. Attackers must break through gates and face off against defenders in one of the most intense and strategic PvP experiences the game has to offer.

To initiate a War, a faction must first push a territory into conflict through the influence race. Once the territory reaches 100% influence, a company from the faction can declare War. The battle is then scheduled, typically for the following day, based on the siege timer.

Wars require coordination, strategy, and communication. Experienced companies organize their teams into specific roles, ensuring every player knows their job. Whether it's capturing control points or manning siege weapons, teamwork is essential for victory.

Defenders must hold off attackers by defending points and reacting quickly to changes in strategy. Having a shot-caller—someone who directs the team's movements and tactics—is crucial to keep the battle organized and cohesive. Winning a War grants your company control over the territory, allowing you to manage the settlement and fort, upgrade its defenses, and reap the rewards of territory ownership.

Outpost Rush: 20v20 PvP Fun

For players looking for smaller-scale but equally competitive PvP, Outpost Rush offers a thrilling 20v20 experience. In Outpost Rush, two teams battle on a large island to capture and control three outposts. The match is objective-based, with points awarded for holding outposts and defeating enemies.

Outpost Rush has seen an exciting update with the introduction of skill-based matchmaking in Season 6, ensuring more balanced and competitive matches. The key to success in Outpost Rush is teamwork, capturing outposts, and being strategic about when to engage in combat. Players can also summon powerful brutes to help with pushing objectives and attacking enemy gates.

Outpost Rush brings together both PvP and PvE elements, as players must also gather resources and defend against enemy NPCs. Baroness, a powerful boss that spawns periodically, can turn the tide of battle if slain, temporarily preventing the enemy team from gaining points.

Arenas: 3v3 Competitive Combat

For those who prefer fast-paced, small-scale PvP, 3v3 Arenas are perfect. In this mode, two teams of three battle in a best-of-five format, with the objective being to eliminate the opposing team. As rounds progress, healing becomes less effective, and if the match drags on, a ring of fire closes in, forcing players to fight to the death.

Arenas is an excellent place to test out different builds and strategies in a more intimate and competitive environment. Season 6 introduces cross-world queues for Arenas, ensuring faster and more balanced matchups across servers. The matchmaking system is designed to create close, skill-based matchups, offering an intense and rewarding PvP experience.

PvPvE Zones: Free-for-All Combat

One of the most anticipated features coming with New World: Aeternum is the PvPvE Zone, a lawless area where both PvP and PvE collide. This zone is located in the foggy southwest reaches of Cutlass Keys, where players will gather cursed doubloons and resources from chests, nodes, and monsters—while also fending off other players looking to steal their loot.

In this free-for-all zone, players must be strategic. You can either focus on gathering resources quickly and escaping or lie in wait, ambushing other players who have done the work for you. Extracting with your loot is the goal, but beware of betrayal and backstabbing—no one is safe in this treasure-filled zone.

Rewards for participating in this PvPvE activity include new artifacts, weaponry, consumables, and even cosmetic items like pirate hats. The dynamic environment ensures a fresh experience with every visit, as players will adopt different strategies for survival and domination.

The PvP systems in New World offer a rich variety of experiences, from massive Wars to fast-paced Arenas and strategic Outpost Rush matches. With the introduction of the new PvPvE zone, New World: Aeternum is poised to deliver even more exciting content for PvP enthusiasts.

Whether you're looking for large-scale faction warfare, objective-based battlegrounds, or intense small-team combat, New World has something for everyone. With so many ways to engage in PvP, players can find a playstyle that suits them and dive into the chaos of battle, experiencing some of the most fun and dynamic PvP the MMO genre offers.

So grab your weapons, pick your faction, and get ready to conquer Aeternum—whether by force, strategy, or cunning betrayal.
