The Lord of Hatred expansion and Season 13 are finally here. Two new classes, reworked skill trees, and fresh endgame systems have turned the game upside down. Nobody has a perfect read on the meta yet, but a few builds are clearly pulling ahead in early testing and previews.
Warlock feels like the strongest new arrival, while Paladin remains a very solid choice. Older classes have some real contenders too. Here's a practical look at what stands out right now, with actual gameplay flow and things worth watching.
The latest Patch 3.0.1 has fundamentally changed how these builds scale. The Lord of Hatred expansion and Season 13 have fundamentally changed how builds scale. With the character level cap now increased to 70, the journey to max level is longer, and the endgame focus has shifted toward a deeper Paragon grind and the new Torment difficulty tiers.
Top-tier builds now rely heavily on the reworked Glyph system, in which Glyph upgrades are tied to Pit Tiers rather than Nightmare Dungeon XP. This makes your choice of starter build more critical than ever, as a strong early performer will help you reach level 70 faster and push into higher Pit tiers to unlock Torment difficulties.
Warlock has multiple strong options that work well from campaign through endgame. Its dual resource system and demon synergies give it real flexibility.
The Abyss Dread Claws build centers on casting wide shadowy claw bursts. You combine it with a Greater Demon from Rampage so the claws circle both you and the demon for overlapping damage. It clears packs fast and feels surprisingly tanky for the class. Positioning matters — you get the best results when you kite elites into the demon's area rather than standing static. The only real risk is overcommitting to the center against fast-moving bosses before your Shadowform stacks refresh.
Hell Fracture plays more stationary and excels at hordes or dense content. You drop persistent rifts that chain-explode on recast. The screen can light up in seconds once you layer a few. It's less mobile but extremely strong for stationary bossing or high-density farming.
The Summoner Rampage version is the easiest of the three. You command a pack of demons while your Greater Demon rides your back and swings for solid damage. It's relaxed, safe, and scales nicely with the new multipliers.
For the most up-to-date planners and detailed skill trees on these Warlock builds, Maxroll.gg is one of the best resources available right now.
Here's a quick side-by-side of the three main Warlock paths:
Build | Playstyle | Strength | Best For | Ease |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Abyss Dread Claws | Active melee | Fast clear + decent tank | General / Speed | Medium |
Hell Fracture | Stationary caster | Massive AoE explosions | Hordes / Bossing | Medium |
Summoner Rampage | Pet commander | Chill & safe | Leveling / Relaxed | Easy |
Paladin sits comfortably behind Warlock but delivers consistent power and survivability.
The Hammerin' (Hammerdin) build keeps its reputation. New sets give huge multipliers on your orbiting hammers during Arbiter windows, and the cube lets you run both Griswold and Morning Star effects together. It clears quickly and feels great when the hammers spin around you while you evade through packs. Minor adjustments to some multipliers happened, but the core loop remains very strong.
Wing Strike is another popular pick, especially for leveling. It's mobile and tanky thanks to barrier generation. The amulet changes hurt a bit, but swapping in the right alternatives keeps it competitive and very safe to play.
Aura-focused variants also benefit from running both key swords at once through clever cube and weapon slot use. They may not be the absolute top, but they feel reliable.
Furthermore, Runewords continue to be a major power spike, especially for Paladin. The Lith-Wat combination offers strong movement speed and resource recovery, helping offset some of the recent mobility cooldown adjustments. For higher-end setups, Bac-Ohm provides a reliable way to trigger War Cry, delivering a solid multiplicative damage boost that helps Paladin stay competitive in the highest Torment tiers.
Whirlwind Barbarian finally got meaningful love. Channeling buffs, new aspects, fire and bleed explosions, plus multiplicative gems on four weapons make the classic spin-to-win feel competitive again. Many players have waited years for this — it might not dominate every leaderboard, but it delivers the fantasy people want.
Necromancer's summoning rework is another highlight. The new helm and crown let you run up to 28 pets, and commanding skeleton mages and warriors feels satisfying. Great for leveling and relaxed endgame play.
Druid sees some promise in companion bear builds and Lacerate with big AoE explosions, though traditional Pulverize lost some of its previous overwhelming power. Sorcerer and Rogue have potential (Hydra and Dance of Knives variants especially), but they sit a step behind the top classes for now.
A key takeaway from the latest Blizzard Patch Notes is the enhanced role of Mercenaries. For solo players on squishier classes like Warlock, Raheir's shielding is nearly essential for survival. On the other hand, Varyana remains excellent for attack speed breakpoints, particularly for Whirlwind Barbarian.
The improved Party Finder tool also makes it much easier to group up for Infernal Hordes or Dark Citadel runs — currently one of the best ways to farm Ancestral gear and Masterworking materials. Note that Ancestral items now drop with a guaranteed Greater Affix, making them significantly more valuable than regular Legendaries.
If you're looking for item stats, skill descriptions, or class overviews, Wowhead's Diablo 4 section is still an excellent reference.
For real-time Helltide tracking and optimal farming routes during Season 13, Helltides.com remains extremely useful.
Warlock is the clearest early leader. Its builds transition smoothly from campaign to endgame and don't require perfect gear to feel strong. Paladin is the best alternative if you prefer a tankier, more straightforward playstyle.
You focus on casting Dread Claws while keeping your Greater Demon active. The claws circle both of you for excellent coverage. You move around the demon to maximize overlap, stack Shadowform, and use Metamorphosis for burst phases. Good movement and positioning reward you more than perfect APM.
Yes. The core orbiting hammer loop with massive Arbiter multipliers and dual cube effects is still very strong. It lost a little power but remains one of the fastest and most satisfying clears available.
Hell Fracture Warlock stands out here. You layer rifts across the ground and trigger chain explosions while staying relatively safe. The pull effect on the Abyss version also helps group enemies perfectly.
Much more viable than it has been in recent seasons. The combination of channeling improvements, new aspects, and multiplicative weapon damage gives it real teeth again. It may not be the absolute strongest, but it's genuinely fun and competitive.
Very much so. Both Warlock Summoner Rampage and the reworked Necromancer minion builds offer strong damage with lower mechanical demand. They perform well in campaign, open world, and mid-to-high endgame.
Warlock is carrying the early meta with several very different but strong playstyles, while Paladin and a few revived older builds provide excellent alternatives. The meta will shift fast once everyone gets their hands on the live patch, so expect updates.
