How to Unlock Your First Mount

To unlock a mount in New World Aeternum, you need to fulfill two key requirements:
Reach Level 20: The first requirement is hitting level 20, although you can also complete the quest at any level beyond that.
Complete the Quest "My Kingdom for a Horse": Once you reach the required level, a quest titled "My Kingdom for a Horse" will appear on your map north of Everfall, near the border with Brightwood. Head to this area to start the questline.
When you accept the quest, your first task is to investigate a cave near a lake where you will commune with a Beast Lord. Inside the cave, you'll collect Azoth-infused oats and unlock the Horse Lo Signate, a symbol that plays a role in later-game mechanics. You'll then bond with a horse by feeding it the oats, and at this point, the horse will disappear. You'll return to the NPC Joi Khon to complete the quest and unlock your first mount.

The mount you receive is Moonshadow, along with 500 mount experience points. This marks the beginning of your journey to improving your mount's speed and abilities.

Summoning and Managing Your Mount

Once you've acquired your mount, you can summon it using the "right on the d-pad" command on a controller or the designated key on a keyboard. Remember that mounts are account-bound, meaning they will be available across all characters. You'll notice that your mount might not be very fast initially, especially off-road. However, you can improve this by leveling up your riding skills.

Leveling Up Your Riding Skill
Your mount's movement speed increases as you level up your riding skill. Here's a breakdown of key milestones:
Level 50: Unlocks your first speed boost.
Level 100: Grants an additional speed bonus.
Level 150: Further enhances your mount's speed.
To level up your riding skill, you'll need to complete mount quests scattered around the map. The first of these quests is located in Everfall, requiring you to ride through checkpoints within a time limit. Stick to the roads for faster speed, as mounts are significantly slower off-road.

Completing these quests gives you riding experience and unlocks new regions with additional quests. For example, after finishing quests in Everfall, Joi Khon will send you to Weaver's Fen, then Great Cleave, where you'll eventually unlock a wolf mount. As you progress further, you can even unlock a lion mount.

Crafting Mount Vitals for Extra Riding XP

One useful tip for leveling up your mount is crafting Mount Vitals at a cooking station. These are consumable items that provide extra riding XP and require water, milk, barley, and vitamins. You earn these vitamins by completing mount quests, so doing these quests is doubly beneficial.

Mount Attachments and Skins

New World also allows you to customize your mounts through attachments and skins:

Attachments: These items, such as charms, improve your mount's performance. For example, certain charms increase dash recharge rates or boost your mount's speed while on the road. You can equip these by accessing your mount inventory and selecting the available attachment slots, which unlock at riding levels 40 and 250.
Skins: You can change the appearance of your mount by purchasing skins from the in-game store or through the battle pass. This purely cosmetic feature lets you personalize your mount's look. For instance, if you prefer the aesthetic of a direwolf over a horse, you can switch skins without affecting your mount's performance.
Additional Mount Types

While the mount you receive from the initial quest is a horse, you can unlock other types of mounts, such as wolves and lions, through quest progression. You can also purchase various mounts directly from the in-game store, like the Azoth Stalker for players who pre-ordered the game.

Mount Performance and Speed Boosts

Your riding level and the terrain primarily influence Mount speed. Mounts are fastest on roads, and their speed can be further enhanced through the following methods:

Leveling Up: As mentioned, reaching milestones in your riding skill will increase your mount's speed.
Attachments: Equip charms that boost speed, such as those that improve dash speed on roads or recharge rates for dashing off-road.
While mounts all have the same base speed, these upgrades and enhancements can make a noticeable difference, particularly when traveling long distances or completing time-sensitive quests.

Tips:

Stick to Roads: Stay on roads to maximize your mount's speed whenever possible.
Do Mount Quests Early: Completing these quests increases your riding skill and unlocks new mounts and regions.
Customization: Don't forget to explore the mount attachment and skin options to personalize your mount and improve its performance.
Finally, the most crucial tip: you can pet your mount by pressing the "G" key on a keyboard or holding "L1 + Right Trigger" on a controller. This charming feature doesn't offer any gameplay benefits, but it's a fun way to bond with your mount in New World.

Following these tips and completing the mount quests will speed up your journey across Aeternum and enhance your overall gameplay experience. Happy riding!
