Lord of Hatred and Season 13 flipped gearing on its head. No more Aspects from dungeons, new item power floors, and the Horadric Cube turning random drops into real upgrades. Most players hit level 70 and immediately wonder where to go next. This guide walks through the current system without the fluff.
The basics still matter. You have white commons, blues, yellow rares, orange legendaries, tan uniques, and purple mythics. After level 70 everything drops at 850 item power in Penitent or higher. That's your starting line. Ancestral pieces hit 900 and open up in Torment. Keep in mind not every Ancestral comes with Greater Affixes. Some do, many don't, and that's where the real chase begins.
Gearing feels slower overall this season, but more rewarding. Legendaries no longer drop like candy, and Rare + Common items have become meaningful crafting ingredients. The loop has shifted from 'loot and salvage' to 'discover, upgrade, and optimize' — and quite a few players are enjoying the new pace.
I think a lot of veterans overlooked how much this shifts early priorities. You cannot just coast on legendaries like before. You need a build that functions with skill synergies first, then layer on gear. Don't hyper-focus on Mythic Uniques in the first 1–2 weeks. It's more efficient to stabilize your character with solid 850 → 900 Ancestral gear and strong affixes first. Once your War Plan trees are leveled and you're clearing higher Torment tiers comfortably, the drop rates and overall value of Mythics improve significantly.
Farm Penitent until you have a full set of 850s. Then move into Torment 1. Ancestral gear starts showing up there, with better odds and quality as you push higher tiers.
Many players complete Pit Tier 10 around level 60–65, only to find they still cannot unlock Torment I after hitting level 70. You must finish a Pit Tier 10 at level 70 for the unlock to register. This has tripped up quite a few players in the early days of Season 13.

War Plans are currently more efficient when played solo because only tasks that match your current plan's sequence will count toward completion. A popular tip is to reroll your War Plan after every cycle and prioritize the activity you want to farm most (such as Undercity or Helltides). This keeps your farming focused and productive.
Recommended Early Game Farming Loop (Level 70 to Torment 1)
A strong and efficient loop many players are using right now is:
Whispers → Helltides → Undercity (if available).
Do quick Grim Favors for Whisper caches, jump into Helltides for targeted chests and materials, then run Undercity for legendary density. Repeat while progressing your War Plan tree. This gives a great balance of gear, materials, and experience with minimal downtime.
Practical farms right now include:
Whisper caches for quick, reliable gear (Blood Maiden and fast bosses are efficient).
Kurast Undercity for legendary density, especially with attunement.
Helltides for slot-specific caches and juiced Blood Maiden runs.
Escalating Nightmare Dungeons and Infernal Hordes for volume and boss loot.
Legion events and Lair bosses for steady materials and targeted uniques.

Ancestral commons are surprisingly strong bases because they appear more often than people expect. Use them. Reroll thoughtfully.
Ancestral Common (white) items are excellent Horadric Cube bases. They drop relatively frequently at high item power and serve as strong starting points. Many players are now deliberately farming Ancestral whites, then using the Cube to add affixes and upgrade them step-by-step into Rare, Legendary, or even Unique items. This has turned previously ignored white drops into valuable crafting materials.
One path that feels optimal: secure your 850 foundation quickly, then use the Cube on high-power rares instead of hoping for perfect orange drops. The risk is wasting materials on low item power pieces that you'll replace soon anyway. Always check the number before committing.
Loot filters help a ton here. Set them to highlight Cube-worthy rares so you don't drown in clutter while farming.
Setting up a Loot Filter early is highly recommended — highlight only Ancestral quality items or pieces with Greater Affixes, even on Magic or Rare gear. Combined with the Horadric Cube, this shifts your playstyle from mindlessly picking up everything to selectively collecting high-potential bases, greatly reducing inventory clutter and decision fatigue.
Aspects come from Legendary items. Focus on high Legendary density activities like Undercity, boosted Nightmare Dungeons, and Whisper caches. The Cube gives more flexibility to extract or build around the powers you need instead of pure RNG.
Farm any content in Penitent or Torment 1 after hitting level 70. Everything drops at 850 there. Prioritize speed-clear activities while leveling your War Plan tree for better caches. A decent build will carry you until the set fills out.
After a stable 850 set. Push Torment 1 for Ancestrals, then higher tiers for quality and Greater Affix chances. Treating this as a layered chase (850s first, then 900s, then stars) prevents early frustration.
It turns good rares and commons into custom legendaries or even uniques. Save strong yellows and ancestral whites. Add or remove affixes strategically. This reduces pure luck dependency and makes farming more intentional.
If you have them, yes — they multiply efficiency across your favorite activities. Without the expansion, stick to traditional strongholds like Helltides, bosses, and Legion events. The core loop still works fine.
Treat them as a nice bonus rather than a focus. They feel best in higher Torment. Farm them through War Plans, Undercity Pranksters, or boss tables later when your base power supports pushing content comfortably.
