The Island of Aeternum: A Land of Challenges
Aeternum is a mysterious and dangerous island teeming with various enemy types. From the moment you wash up on its shores, you are thrust into encounters with many different creatures divided into distinct groups, each with their own abilities and attacks. These groups include:
The Lost – A mysterious group of undead-like enemies.
The Corrupted – Humans and creatures taken over by a dark force.
The Angry Earth – Nature-based enemies who protect the island.
The Varangians – A band of raiders with their own agenda.
Beasts – Wild animals and predators native to the island.
Ancients – Powerful and ancient beings with ties to Aeternum's history.
Each enemy type in the game has unique weaknesses, which players can exploit to maximize their damage. For example, the Ancients are weak to strike, void, and do lightning damage, while the corruptors are vulnerable to thrust, nature, and arcane. Knowing these weaknesses helps players prepare for tougher encounters by equipping weapons and gear that exploit these vulnerabilities.
Expeditions: Cooperative Dungeon Crawling
One of the most exciting PvE features in New World is its Expeditions—instanced dungeons designed for groups of five players. These dungeons offer a blend of puzzles, challenging encounters, named enemies, and boss fights. Every boss has its own set of unique mechanics, forcing players to work together to defeat them. Each Expedition features a specific enemy type or types, such as Angry Earth in the Garden of Genesis or Corrupted in Tempest's Heart.
Rewards for completing these Expeditions include specialized loot, and while some Expeditions appear early in the game, they remain relevant throughout endgame content thanks to the introduction of mutated Expeditions.
Mutated Expeditions: A New Level of Challenge
New World offers mutated versions of its Expeditions for those seeking even greater challenges. These mutations dramatically increase the difficulty by scaling up enemy levels and adding unique mutations that alter gameplay. Each week, three different Expeditions are mutated, with players facing three levels of difficulty:
Level 1 Mutations – Add elemental modifiers that alter how enemies deal damage, such as adding void damage.
Level 2 Mutations – Introduce promotions that make enemies more dangerous, granting them abilities such as increased damage or enhanced stamina-breaking attacks.
Level 3 Mutations – Add curses on top of existing mutations. These can severely affect players, such as the frenzy curse, which punishes dodging by dealing stacking void damage.
Mutations make even the most familiar Expeditions feel fresh and engaging. Players must carefully plan their gear, attributes, and load-outs to mitigate these mutations' additional challenges. Equipping the right gems for damage reduction or enhancement is key. For instance, wearing armor with Amber gems increases nature damage absorption, which is crucial in an Expedition that includes enemies dealing with nature damage.
Debuffs and Weapon Synergies
Combat in New World isn't just about exploiting enemy weaknesses; it also involves applying debuffs to make enemies more vulnerable. Two of the most important debuffs in PvE are Rend, which reduces enemy damage absorption and Weaken, which decreases the enemy's attack power.
Certain weapons are especially useful in PvE for applying these debuffs. For example, the Spear excels at applying both Rend and Weaken while also dealing significant damage. The Great Axe, on the other hand, is valuable for its ability to group enemies with its Gravity Well skill, making them easier to defeat when clumped together.
Gems and Attribute Management
Choosing the right attributes and weapon gems is critical to success in PvE. Each weapon scales with specific attributes, such as Strength, Dexterity, or Intelligence, and investing points in the appropriate attributes significantly boosts a player's damage output. If a player finds that their build isn't optimal, they can easily respec their attribute points at any time, allowing them to adjust their playstyle or weapon choice as needed.
In addition to attributes, gems play an essential role in enhancing combat effectiveness. Players can slot gems into their weapons to convert part of their damage into elemental damage. For example, adding a Ruby to a weapon grants the Ignited effect, converting 50% of the weapon's damage to fire damage, which is particularly effective against Angry Earth enemies.
Special gems like Carnelian serve important roles in group dynamics. Tanks use these gems to increase threat generation, ensuring they can maintain aggro from enemies. Conversely, non-tank players may use these gems to reduce threat, preventing enemies from targeting them during fights.
Open World PvE: Solo and Group Adventures
Beyond Expeditions, New World offers plenty of open-world PvE content. Scattered across Aeternum are elite zones, named enemies, and bosses that challenge players. Areas like Shattered Mountain, Isle of Zervan, and Brimstone Sands offer thrilling encounters with elite enemies. Players can take on these challenges solo or in groups, depending on their skill level and gear.
In addition to elite zones, players progress through Soul Trials, and boss fights are tied to the main quest line. These bosses feature their own mechanics and can be tough to defeat without proper preparation. Players should check their attributes, equip the right weapons to exploit boss weaknesses, and slot appropriate gems to ensure success.
Seasonal Events: Time-Limited Challenges
New World hosts seasonal events that introduce special PvE content throughout the year, including world bosses. During the Nightville Hollow event, for instance, players can hunt down a massive world boss named Balazo. These types of encounters are designed for large groups, providing an opportunity for players to come together and earn exclusive rewards.
Whether you prefer group-based dungeon crawling in Expeditions, challenging yourself with mutated Expeditions, or enjoying the thrill of open-world exploration and boss fights, New World: Aeternum has a vast array of PvE content to offer. With strategic use of weapons, attributes, gems, and synergy between debuffs and skills, players can overcome even the toughest challenges Aeternum has in store.
As the world of New World continues to evolve, PvE enthusiasts will find no shortage of engaging content that suits their playstyle—whether they are solo adventurers, hardcore min-maxers, or group-focused players.
