Hey there, Sanctuary wanderers! Season 8: Belial's Return launched on April 29, 2025, but after a rocky Public Test Realm (PTR) phase—think overly nerfed builds and a brutal Torment IV—Blizzard has rolled out significant changes to make the season more enjoyable. From smoother levelling to better loot drops, these updates aim to address community feedback and bring players back to the fight against Belial.

Levelling Adjustments: A Smoother Start

Blizzard initially planned to slow down levelling in Season 8, aiming to stretch the journey to level 60 from an average of 8 hours (or 3–4 for speedrunners) to 15 hours. Following community pushback, they have scaled back this change. The experience reward reduction between levels 1 and 25 has been lessened, creating a smaller gap compared to Season 7. This means you'll still reach level 60 faster than Blizzard's original 15-hour goal, though it'll take a bit longer than last season.
Early-game gear drops have also been tweaked: up to level 25–30, you'll mostly see magic and rare items, with magic items now having two affixes and rares having three. This makes rares worth upgrading into legendaries, unlike before, when they felt useless. By levels 40–50, you'll be “bathing in legendaries” again, ensuring your build comes together as you approach endgame. These changes slow early progression slightly but keep the grind manageable.

Pit Scaling and Torment IV: More Accessible Endgame

The PTR saw complaints about Pit tier scaling, with Pit 70 and 80 requiring “trillions of damage” and high-tier glyphs (e.g., level 100) to even compete. Blizzard has reduced the monster health increase per Pit tier, dropping the difference from 20x to 6–7x compared to last season. Torment IV, previously equivalent to Pit 65, now aligns with Pit 72—still challenging but achievable for most players.
For those grinding glyphs, Blizzard adjusted the odds of upgrading Paragon glyphs at lower Pit tiers. Now, a level 50 glyph can upgrade in a Pit 14, or a level 70 glyph in a Pit 60, where previously the chance was 0%. While the video notes that glyph level 45 is enough for most builds to dominate Torment IV, this change helps casual players who can't tackle higher Pit tiers but still want to max out their glyphs.

Apparition Incursions: More Rewarding Events

Season 8's core activity, Apparition Incursions, lets you spawn mini-bosses in Sanctuary to earn Boss Powers and Spectral Ash. Initially, these events felt “unfun and useless,” offering just one Boss Power and minimal loot for the time investment. Blizzard has revamped them to integrate with the Whisper system, making them rewarding even in the late game. You'll now earn Whisper Caches, including the reintroduced Ancestral Whisper Cache, which offers solid loot. This ensures Apparition Incursions remain relevant throughout your Season 8 journey, whether you're levelling or farming endgame gear.

Lair Boss Rework: Better Loot and Easier Access

Lair Bosses (formerly Endgame Bosses) have been overhauled for fairer and more rewarding fights:
Summoning Materials: No materials are needed to summon bosses—you can fight them anytime (e.g., Beast in the Ice in Torment I). However, looting their Hoard chest requires keys: 1 for Initiate bosses (e.g., Grigoire, Varshan), 3 for Greater bosses (e.g., Duriel), and 2 for Exalted (Belial). Drop rates for materials like Malignant Hearts, Living Steel, Distilled Fear, Exquisite Blood, and Judicator's Mast have been buffed across Helltide Chests, Nightmare Dungeons, Blood Maiden, Legion Events, and World Bosses.
Belial Ambush: Killing any boss (e.g., Varshan, Duriel, Harbinger of Hatred) has a chance to trigger a surprise ambush by Belial. Defeating him drops 2 Betrayer Husks; collect 12 to summon the Lord of Lies for the ultimate fight.
Loot Buffs: The first unique item from a Lair Boss is guaranteed from their unique pool. Additional uniques have a 50% chance to be from the general pool. In Torment III, bosses drop an extra guaranteed unique item from their pool, with another in Torment IV. Party play adds a 33% chance per member for an additional unique from the boss's unique pool (not cumulative). Loot is now per-player, ensuring everyone opens their chest without sharing.

Purveyor of Curiosities: A Gambling Buff

The Purveyor of Curiosities, where you spend Obols, has been significantly improved. Spending 2,000 Obols to fill your inventory now guarantees 2–3 Ancestral items, with a 70–80% chance of getting legendaries. Uniques can also drop, making this a viable way to target specific aspects. For example, Druids can buy weapons for a Shockwave Aspect or rings for resource aspects, speeding up the hunt for key build pieces. This buff makes gambling with the Purveyor a more reliable endgame strategy.

Boss Powers and Class Balance: Nerfs and Buffs

Boss Powers Nerfed but Supportive

Boss Powers, a core mechanic of Season 8, were nerfed from their PTR state. Previously, you could build around them (e.g., a Wandering Death Chest Beam build), but now they're supportive rather than build-defining. They still deal decent damage and help ease your Season 8 journey, but don't expect to centre your entire playstyle around them. While this disappointed some players (myself included—I loved those unique builds!), Blizzard rolled back some nerfs to keep them impactful.

Class-Specific Changes

Barbarian: Whirlwind got a buff, making it stronger than ever, but the Executioner's Aspect (key for Earthquake builds) was nerfed, reducing its bonus per Strength from 15% to 5%, though damage stays at 200%. Earthquake Barbs are less dominant but still viable.
Druid: Blizzard pushes Storm Strike and human-form builds, buffing lightning-focused playstyles.
Necromancer: Blood Wave got a slight damage buff after being “trash” in Season 7 (100x less damage), but it's still underwhelming. Blood Lance now always hits opponents, though it remains weak. The Bone Spear bugs have been fixed, potentially making it a viable option.
Rogue: Death Trap builds were nerfed with lower damage and longer cooldowns, but you can still achieve Season 7-level spam with some effort.
Sorcerer: Ice Shards got a big boost via the Avalanche Key. Passive: 30% less mana cost for Frost skills, 60% increased damage, and 25% extra against Vulnerable enemies, totalling 85% more damage for Frost builds.

Season Journey and Spectral Ash: A New Approach

The Season Journey has been reworked, decoupling it from the Battle Pass (now Reliquaries). Smoldering Ashes, previously earned through the Battle Pass for Seasonal Blessings (e.g., bonus XP, better Purveyor drops, Masterworking materials), are now tied to Season Journey objectives. Completing chapters or individual tasks—like killing Uber bosses or reaching Torment II—grants Smoldering Ashes alongside caches with ancestral gear. This encourages players to engage with the Journey early, fast-tracking blessings for a smoother levelling experience. Spectral Ash costs to upgrade Boss Powers have also been lowered, with increased drop rates, making power progression more accessible.

Is Season 8 Worth Playing?

Despite these changes, Season 8 doesn't introduce new endgame content beyond reworks, buffs, and balances. If you're not a fan of Boss Powers or crave a fresh endgame system, you might still sit this one out. However, the smoother levelling, better loot, and improved activities make it a more balanced experience than the PTR suggested. I'm personally excited to level each class to 60, test new builds, and see how far Boss Powers can be pushed, especially with fun options like Belial's Eye Beam still viable post-nerf. Whether you're returning or not, these changes show Blizzard is listening to the community.
