Cataclysm Classic: Firelands Majordomo Staghelm

       by        Game: Cataclysm Classic Guide

Majordomo Staghelm is the penultimate boss in the Firelands raid in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Classic. Despite being the second-to-last boss, Staghelm is relatively simple to execute with the right strategy. This encounter revolves around his Druid shapeshifting abilities, with the boss switching between cat, scorpion, and occasionally night elf forms based on raid positioning.

To defeat Staghelm, your raid must master positioning, maintain the Concentration Buff for high damage output, and perform clean form transitions. Here's everything you need to know!

Team Composition

Tanks: 2
Healers: 5 (you can reduce to 4 once comfortable)
DPS: Mix of melee and ranged

Key Mechanic: Concentration Buff

Each raid member benefits from the Concentration Buff, which increases damage and healing output by 25%, stacking up to 100% after 25 seconds without taking damage. Maintaining this buff is critical for keeping up with Staghelm's massive health pool.

Form Mechanics and Abilities
Staghelm switches between three main forms depending on the raid's positioning: Cat Form, Scorpion Form, and Night Elf Form. Each form triggers different abilities and demands unique raid positioning.

Cat Form
Staghelm enters Cat Form when the majority of the raid spreads out.
Leaping Flames: When Staghelm reaches 100 energy, he jumps at a random ranged player, leaving a burning disc at the impact location that deals moderate fire damage.
Spirit of the Flame: Each leap spawns a mirror image of Staghelm with low health. Cleave these down quickly, as they continue to deal damage until killed.
Cat Form Strategy:
Spread out as a raid, allowing Staghelm to enter Cat Form.
Avoid the Leaping Flames AoE to maintain your Concentration Buff.
Tanks should grab and position Spirits of the Flame, keeping them near Staghelm for efficient cleaving.

Scorpion Form
When the raid stacks up in melee range, Staghelm shifts into Scorpion Form.
Flame Scythe: When Staghelm reaches 100 energy, he uses Flame Scythe, a cone attack split among everyone in its range. If not shared by the entire raid, it can cause fatal damage to individual players.
Scorpion Form Strategy:
Stack in front of Staghelm to soak Flame Scythe as a group. However, to avoid too many stacks of Adrenaline (which increases his energy generation rate by 20% per stack), spread out again before he casts Flame Scythe to force a switch back to Cat Form.
Ideally, call for the spread around 75 energy to avoid dealing with Flame Scythe at all.

Night Elf Form (Triggered Every Third Swap)
After every three form swaps (Cat → Scorpion → Cat, or Scorpion → Cat → Scorpion), Staghelm briefly changes into Night Elf Form, pausing to unleash one of two possible abilities.

Burning Orbs:
Spawns five Burning Orbs around Staghelm, each targeting the closest player and applying a stacking DoT that increases the longer they stand near the orb.
Players should carefully manage these orbs, rotating nearby players to prevent high stacks.

Searing Seeds:
All players are debuffed with Searing Seeds, which explode after a random duration, dealing AoE damage.
Move out of the raid to prevent splash damage when your seed is close to exploding. Note that Concentration Buff is lost upon explosion.

Phase by Phase Walkthrough

Pull and Initial Cat Phase:
Begin the fight with the raid spread out, forcing Staghelm into Cat Form.
Tanks should pick up Staghelm and position him while raid members build their Concentration Buff.
At around 100% Concentration Buff, use Bloodlust/Heroism for maximum DPS.
Avoid Leaping Flames to preserve the Concentration Buff, and focus down any Spirit of the Flame adds that spawn.

Transition to Scorpion Form:
Once Staghelm's energy builds up and Adrenaline stacks increase, stack the raid on him to shift into Scorpion Form.
If Flame Scythe is unavoidable, ensure the entire raid is stacked to soak it.
Spread out again before Flame Scythe's cast to avoid heavy raid-wide damage, prompting Staghelm to shift back to Cat Form.

Night Elf Form and Burning Orbs:
After three swaps, Staghelm shifts into Night Elf Form and summons Burning Orbs.
Move as a group away from the orbs, rotating players nearby to manage stacks and minimize debuff durations.
Tanks position themselves between the orbs and the raid to absorb stacks if needed, especially if melee DPS players are at risk of losing their Concentration Buff.

Second Rotation with Searing Seeds:
After another three swaps, Staghelm uses Searing Seeds in Night Elf Form, applying a timed bomb debuff to all players.
Watch the timer on your Searing Seed and move away from the raid when it's about to expire, preventing a chain reaction of AoE damage.
Once seeds explode, return to stacking and continue the fight.

Role-Specific Tips

Tanks
Positioning: Keep Staghelm stationary and avoid unnecessary movement during Cat Form. In Scorpion Form, be prepared to tank swap and help absorb orb stacks in Night Elf Form.
Flame Scythe Management: Be prepared to spread out with the raid as Flame Scythe approaches. An accidental Scythe can be deadly, especially if the raid hasn't stacked properly.
Burning Orbs Rotation: Help intercept orbs if DPS players are at risk, allowing them to retain their Concentration Buff.

Healers
Concentration Buff Management: Use the Concentration Buff to maximize healing output. Avoid Leaping Flames to maintain this buff, and consider rotating healers on Burning Orbs if the debuff is affecting DPS too heavily.
Searing Seeds Management: Watch Searing Seed timers, anticipating which players may be moving out to prevent clustered explosions.
Pre-positioning: Keep an eye on tank positions and be ready to move between the raid and Burning Orbs to protect critical DPS players.

DPS
Avoid Damage: Concentrate on avoiding Leaping Flames and Burning Orbs to keep your Concentration Buff as long as possible.
Quick Movement: When the raid leader calls for spreading or stacking, react immediately. Delays can trigger additional Leaping Flames or an unsoaked Flame Scythe, leading to high damage or wipes.
Orb Management: Ranged DPS should rotate on Burning Orbs to prevent too many debuff stacks, particularly if the tanks are busy positioning the boss or handling other mechanics.

FAQs

Q1: How often does Staghelm switch forms?
Staghelm changes forms whenever the raid adjusts from spread to stacked positioning, or vice versa. He automatically switches to Night Elf Form every three swaps.

Q2: How can we keep the Concentration Buff up during Burning Orbs?
Designate a rotation for nearby players to stand near each orb, managing stacks and keeping your buff active by avoiding high debuff stacks.

Q3: Can we avoid Flame Scythe altogether?
Yes, with careful timing and stacking management, your raid can spread out before Flame Scythe is cast, forcing a form change before it becomes problematic.

Q4: Does the Searing Seed explosion remove the Concentration Buff?
Yes, even with defensive cooldowns, any damage from Searing Seed explosions will drop your Concentration Buff.

Q5: What happens if someone dies with a Searing Seed debuff?
The Searing Seed explodes, dealing AoE damage to players within range. This can cause a cascading effect, so players should watch their timers carefully.

Q6: Can tanks handle Burning Orbs to protect DPS?
Yes, tanks can help rotate near the orbs to allow DPS to retain their Concentration Buff, particularly useful when pushing DPS during the last phases.
